Do I really need a Touratech clamp?

About to take the plunge and buy a Zumo 500, but I have heard concerns about the security of the clamp fitting. Touratech are particularly dismissive of the standard Garmin item with the implication that the GPS will "oscillate" and get bounced around unless you have the Touratech shock absorber system. The locking TT holder is the thick end of 100 beer tokens. Now, I do not see myself doing any off roading so its going to be normal roads apart from the odd pothole. I can see that the security(anti theft) locking screw on the Garmin item can be a PIA but there is a fix for that, so the bottom line is should I just stick with the standard holder? Any views/ advice welcome.

Don't waste your money. Standard clamp is fine.
Maybe worth investing a fiver into one of ECM's security screws for convenience but not that necessary

I have only done 12000 miles with the standard garmin one so it's not an exhaustive test but it is fine, security thumb screw is brilliant. Only problem I had is I lost the magnetic cover for when the zumo isn't attached but garmin posted me a new one foc.

I've used one of MIGSEL's security screws and it does the trick fine.

I've not had a 550 fall off in 30k + miles using standard mount

I always remove it for security if bike not within sight, so do not want restricted TT cradle.

Standard mount again, mainly road use but never a problem on un-metalled roads either. However, if your leaping sand dunes.....

Are you leaping Sand dunes?;)

I did buy the lockable TT mount for my Zumo when fitted on my K bike. However, on the GSA I use the standard BMW mount for the Zumo which fits on the higher screen brace. When in position, if the locking mechanism opened accidentally, the screen will prevent full opening and therefore the Zumo would be safe. I have removed the security screw as it's a pain in the proverbial and I have never had the Zumo come loose anyway.

When I first got the GSA I tried the TT mount fitted using the standard RAM fitting to the upper brace and it was horrible due to the vibration with the necessary extention to get it to clear the screen. If I was bar mounting the Zumo I might consider using the TT mount I already have but after my experience on the road ( not off road) I would'nt buy one again.

Personally i have the lockable TT thingy and it's fine and does not vibrate. It is a pain in the ass removing it when going into petrol stations so i leave it on, locked.

If you have the cash, TT is the best option IMO.

I think its actually one of the things that TT actually make that's usefull.

Thanks

Many thanks for all your advice. I have now got my hands on the ZUmo and the standard cradle looks a pretty robust arrangement. I can see that the security screw could be a pain, so I will go the Migsil option. Thanks once again. Great forum!
