NB: Mrjonesybop - I know you'll likely see this! :p

So, my brother has moved to sunny Scotland, and left his F650GS Dakar in our mums garage, in pieces. I've currently got a BMW K100 RT which i've already rebuilt, and a Yamaha XT250 which is a long-term slow project that i'm thinking about finishing off.

The Dakar was stripped for a KTM fork upgrade and then more than that, so is currently engine, frame, and everything else exploded across the bomb site of the garage amongst old lawnmowers, a sidecar, several go-karts and kayak paraphernalia. The 21" front wheel, and by the sounds of it brake disk and front mudguard have been sold on, but most of the rest of it should be there if I can find it.

Do I want to take this on as rebuild potential? It has been CAT.C at some point in its past life, but rode OK before it was decommissioned AFAIK. Got one or two ideas for it, but never had a GS before, and conscious that replacing the wheel etc could be expensive. Plus no idea if all the parts ARE there, or if i'll actually be able to figure out what goes where?

Oh, and anyone got any idea what its worth? Would need to throw some pennies at him for the bits, and need to justify it to myself first!

Cheers

Id put it to him that it's in the way and what's he going to do about it. I'd then offer to "help" him and get rid of it for him. When you have sorted that out have a good look at what you have to do and how much it would cost. It might be better to sell off and use the money for one that's all there. JJH

I'm not too worried about how to approach him - indeed i've told him i'm interested and i'm going to have a look properly once i've had a dig. I'm not looking for a bargain, just to pay a fair price if i decide to make a crack at it.

What i'm more wondering is what a bike like this in pieces is actually worth - very difficult to tell i suspect, and whether it is worth spending the time/effort trying to put it back together - is a 2001 F650GS Dakar worth having, or am I better off expending my time elsewhere?

Cheers

A 2001 f 650 Dakar is definitely worth having. But you have to do some sums to see if your one is a viable economic proposition. I would suggest if it's going to cost more than £1500/£2000 it's better to leave it. No doubt there will be people saying that their worth more. I'd also suggest a bit of leeway as projects like these always cost more than first tough. Never less. JJH

Ok, thats good, thanks. I know certainly both my K100 + the XT have both gone over what i was expecting to spend on them, so I don't expect this would be any different.

Think i might have to spend some time the the garage with the parts fische to see what might be missing then.

Even if someone gave it me I probably wouldn't take it on. I certainly wouldn't pay anything for it.

The problem is it's not a particularly desirable bike. It's going to be easy to catch a cold with it.
