Don't want to be tied in to a landline . Is it possible to use tablets without having a line ???? If so what would you all recommend to get , any and all advice would be great as I am total numpty with computers . Thankyou in advance Geno

You have a few options, get a tablet with 3g built-in, insert a sim and use internet directly.

Or get something like a MiFi, this has a 3g modem built-in and acts as a WiFi hotspot. Your tablet then connects through the MiFi (using WiFi) to connect to the Internet.

So the answer is yes . First option sounds the easiest way , don't want or need a landline , so that is why I am asking , Thanyou .

Just make sure you have a good 3G signal in your area, if you have an android phone they can create a wifi hotspot although it would eat into your data allowance. iPhone 4 can create wifi personal hotspots but depends on your provider if they charge extra for it !!! I think 3 network doesn't charge and has best allowance fir data. But do you'd own research on this.

How do we go about checking our 3G signal strength ???

Usually your chosen mobile phone provider will have a map showing rough coverage.

In UK companies like Carphone Warehouse will sort out coverage, if you don't get it with one they change you to another supplier.

If you are in a dodgy area for signal the MiFi type units can be better allowing you to leave it setup in the room with the best signal.

I use a Zoom unit like this when working on site, it has an Ethernet connection as well as WiFi so can be used with virtually any network ready device. The 3g bit is done by plugging a 3g dongle in from your chosen supplier.

If you have an Android equipped phone you can turn it into a wifi spot as well. You need to check that your phone company allows it though. 3 Does but most of the others want to charge extra. Still cheaper than the extra money for a 3G tablet and another contract though.

The South is pretty well served for mobile wifi as so many people have ditched their Eircom landlines. We managed quite well with mobile dongles in West Clare, before we went over to a Ripplecom wireless broadband and phone package. The trouble is that the coverage maps are generally based on outdoor signals ... and who wants to sit out in the rain?!

Don't know if Ripplecom operate in the North, but you would get a better connection speed than with 3G.

Network 3 ???

Have any of you learned folks found a 3 dongle that let's you pay monthly for at least 10GB , or is there a way round if we buy 3GB and then buy 10GB . We are both lost when it comes to dongles . Any help please or advice welcome . Thankyou Geno PS Lady Friend not sure how many GB needed . But 3 teenagers will use plenty . Thanks again

Three do 1 month rolling contract that gives you 10Gb for £15 a month.

Look for Mobile Broadband SIM Only 10GB - 1 Month.
£15a month

No quite pre-pay but not a full contract.

Tru pre-pay Three gives you 7gb max for £25

May be worth buying a 12 month pre pay with 12GB to start with to gauge how much you will use.

I bought a 12 month 12GB nearly a year ago. I have used it a lot while working away and with 4 days of the 12 months to go have over 4GB left. I think they do some compression for mobile broadband so data use is lower than you expect.

Ebay generally have the 12 month cards at a reasonable price and will give you a ball park figure for your monthly usage before committing to a contract.

I do an emergency internet service for local businesses using a 3G router and assorted external aerials to get the mobile phone signal strength strong enough for a decent connection. Data is more expensive than fixed line, but it does for an emergency.

If you use a standard mobile phone with a SIM in from the same company you might use for your data connection (I tend to use Three for their data only rates), you will see how good the signal is on the phone status bar. If it is low, don't use a dongle unless you can attach an external aerial to it. I can sometimes get a connection where the phone shows no signal, but need to use an antenna on a short aerial mast.

Hi Simon , with sim only I would still need a 3 dongle and if I buy used of eBay will it work on computer ?? That looks like what she wants if it sim fits into dongle . Thankyou .

Sorry to hijack your thread gino but I have an iPad 2 wi-fi and 3G but where I live in the sticks in Essex there's no signal is there any way of getting 3G I know another numpty question.

There is this one on Ebay

Should do the trick. Its the E586 which is HSPA+ therefore pretty fast if you have that availble near you.

You either plug it in to a USB port which is what I do or use it via WiFi.

If I got this , then I get the sim from 3 , all this is very confusing lol . Thanks . Ps what are these things worth ???

Just check, as not all Three SIMS allow you to teather.

The Three One Plan is £25 per month on a rolling contract, unlimited data, 2000 any network minutes and 5000 texts (IIRC). I use it for data (PC teathered to Android phone) as well as business phone, and only ever pay the £25 unless I end up sending media messages

How do I find out about all that ????
