I would really like to come visit you lads down in that there London.
I thought maybe Thursday until Sunday I'm open to any dates and hopefully someone would like to meet up.
Wrappers, Grantmac, Steptoe, EVskij etc. A night out on the Friday with Steptoe would be on my list of to do things 😀
I would come down on the train and not sure on which station I would come into and no idea on accommodation.
Only had a short night out there so really it would be my first proper visit.
Accommodation. I don't need anywhere fancy but don't want to stay in a dump either. Maybe close to whichever station I come into.
So I'm open to suggestions and need chaperones for a first time Doc does London

Cheers Doc

Maybe some of you other Northerners want to come down with me ?

There’s a meal and drinks coming up in London on (I think) 15th January where the fellows above will be there, plus an honorary member from further north (y)

January is a bit difficult as I have a bit on that month.

Best time to visit? I’d suggest spring or early autumn, outside of the school holidays.

Station? You’ll probably come into Kings Cross.

Hotel? You’ll be spoilt for choice. My suggestion; book up early as most hotels will crank up their prices, the nearer you get to arrival. Kings Cross station is at least reasonably central. Busy but central. It also has very good tube, bus and taxi links.

Getting about? Just tap in and out, using a credit or debit card. Take care though to use the same card each time. In other words, don’t tap in with one card and then tap out with another. There may be some deals on pre-paid TfL cards too, perhaps? I should know but as I am not a tourist (and don’t now pay anyway) I haven’t needed to look.

Things to see and do? In one of the world’s greatest capital cities of around 8,000,000 people, there is (not unexpectedly) more than enough. Let’s say you have two full days, Friday and Saturday. I’d maybe do the ‘west bit’ on Saturday, out as far as Kensington and on Saturday, the ‘east bit’ out as far as the Thames Barrier and / or Greenwich. The best big views of London come from Archway/ Highgate (probably a bit too far north), Primrose Hill and Greenwich, or one of the tall buildings or, of course, from the London Eye itself. There used to helicopter flights too, I think or did they stop when a chopper ran into a crane near Battersea?

With a bit of thought, it would be possible to put together a pretty good ‘tour’, I guess. Certainly good enough to maybe say to yourself
. I’d like to come down again and see XYZ a bit more.

A very nice Travelodge for not a lot of money at The Oval cricket ground. Will mean you need to tube it there, just don’t look at anyone or try to talk to them :)

Me on a tube unsupervised.
Sounds like a plan, I’m in

Will there be whippets n dominoes?
Of course and flat caps.

Indeed great idea. As I just posted in another thread either join one of our pre-planned meet ups or we set up a special one. Loads to see as Wappers has suggested, depends what interests are. I think a trip up the Shard on a clear day is something to behold. Unfortunately due to my commute schedule I am only available on wednesdays and thursday evenings but hey any event doesn't depend on my presence😀😀😀

Does to me.;) And I'll need a special date because I'm special. Mam says so.

Off the top of my head, I’ve just slotted together something for the east bit
.

Early start.

DLR out to the Thames Barrier, about as far east as London sort of goes.

Train / river boat to Greenwich / Cutty Sark and up the hill to the Royal Observatory (as the crow flies it’s not far but it might well take about an hour or more)

Back down, through Wren’s masterpiece of the Royal Naval College and then a river boat, westwards along the Thames, past Canary Wharf / the O2 dome thing, hopping off on the south side of the Thames

Northwards, over Tower Bridge to the Tower of London and the remaining parts of the old Roman / Medieval London Wall

Through the City of London and the Monument / Old Billingsgate / Lloyd’s of London / Bank of England / Mansion House / The Guildhall

On to Postman’s Park / St Paul’s Cathedral

Holborn

British Museum

GPO Tower

You are now on the eastern side of the West End and not too far from Kings Cross.

The end

That’s a very full day, trust me and quite a long way. It might be possible to shove the Thames cable car thing in, too. I’d propose to do a recce of it first, not least I have never needed to do it all in one day.

I can knock the western day out in a similar fashion, starting at Kensington Palace and travelling eastwards, to end up in Soho / Kings Cross.

I frequently walk from Kings Cross to Knightsbridge so a doddle for a northener

The leader could hold a placard saying “Tossers”, with everyone following behind like UKGSers version of Chinese tourists. :D

I reckon Doc needs a walking bus led by our exploring members @grantmac and @Wapping finishing at a hostelry of choice. I’d be there.
100% it’s an excellent excuse to gather and drink overpriced beer. I am in.

PS Waps’ suggestions are excellent, as would be a walking tour of the river Fleet (a very fine pub crawl masquerading as a cultural experience)!
