Cheltenham for us. 150 miles from Plymouth and half way home.If you get a late afternoon or teatime ferry berth from Portsmouth or Plymouth, then it’s easily doable from Yorkshire in a daytime day
Then you have a day to relax onboard
On the way back, if the the ferry arrives late in the afternoon or is delayed I book a night in Princetown on Dartmoor- about 30 mins from the terminal and then you have the next day to get home
Later in September we are coming into Portsmouth at 1.30-2pm and stopping over near Hay on Wye for the night on the way home
Yes, we used to do it in a oner and get home at 10pm …..but as you get older, why bother
