"Dodging Potholes" - Motorcycling in Eastern Europe

Hi Dave,
Thanks for signing the book. A great read. Just got back from Croatia, currently in the planning process for more in the Balkens in September.
How did the cycle challenge go?
Thanks again for getting the pencil sharp putting it to paper, sharing your trip experiences....job well done.

P.S How's the new job?

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for that and hope you had a good time in Croatia. The cyclists made it, arriving in Calarasi last Friday after 2 weeks and 2100 km to a large welcome reception.

The new job's going fime, although with so many business trips at the moment, I'm not getting much chance to ride the bike. Hopefully at the end of August I'll be able to get a few more miles under my belt.

Best regards

Dave

Sold Out!

I’m pleased to be able to say that I’ve now sold out of books. Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraising action by buying books and a very special thank you to all those who also sent additional donations. I have just handed over a cheque for a whopping €2807,37 to the project. Some work has already been carried out at the orphanage using the project money, the most important being a complete new roof (see picture below), so hopefully the damp walls and ceilings are now a thing of the past.

I hope to visit the orphanage again next year. If this works out, I’ll post an update following my return.

Thank you once again and a very happy new year to you all!

Dave

Always good to know where ones money goes to - great cause :D

Well done Dave...pleased i could do a little bit to help

Nice one Dave. What could be finer than helping someone less fortunate than yourself, whilst enjoying the second finest pastime on the planet- motorcycling.

Congrats from me, love and hugs from Kirst.

This is exactly what I was going to offer with my copy having only just read it yesterday, but wanted to make sure that Dave was OK with it just in case he had more copies he wanted rid of first.

That said, so long as the dosh goes to his chosen destination, I guess there wouldn't be a problem.....

So, I make the same offer to anyone that wants to read a genuinely candid write up of how someone went the extra mile to offer some help to those worse off than ANY of us for sure.....:thumb

Hi Coolcarbon - I've just e-mailed you :type

Missed this before.......................glad to help out Dave and really enjoyed your book:thumb

Hi Johnny, many thanks once again! :thumb2

Russ: Many, many thanks, however, the situation at present is as follows:

Thanks for such a wonderful offer, however, the official donations account has been closed. The reason for this is that to protect the money, it was passed over to an organisation called “Pro Umanitas” http://www.proumanitas.org/index_en.php . This organisation was chosen due to their specialist knowledge of supporting help projects in Moldova, this ensuring that the money is really being spent as it was intended, instead of disappearing or being spent on something other than it was intended. In addition, they are also pumping their own money into projects, meaning work can be completed even if another donation source is insufficient. Here’s some extracts from their website:

Wonderful present for children from the boarding school in Calarasi on their first school day
A wonderful present for children with slight mental handicap from the boarding school in Calarasi: with the beginning of the new school year children study under a newly renovated roof. The partial roof repair of the school building was possible due to the financial support of mayor's office of Bühl partner town, Germany.

[14.07.2008]
“Every kilometer counts…”
Thanks to the action “Every kilometer counts…” organized by the city hall of Bühl, Germany, donations for roof’ repair of the boarding school in Calarasi were raised. The cyclists rode 2200 km in order to improve the living standards for children. A meeting with the representatives of Bühl city took place in the boarding school in Calarasi on Saturday, 12.07.2008. Within this meeting the decision of roof’ repair was made.

[04.07.2008]
Bühl city for boarding school in Calarasi
Bühl city organized a very special long-distance cycle tour / Bühl, GER – Calarasi MD /. This cycle tour that realizes under the logo “Every kilometer counts…” will raise donations for the boarding school for children with slight mental handicap in Calarasi. With raised money next project within the boarding school in Calarasi will be accomplished together with PRO UMANITAS.

To be honest, we don’t really know what the current situation is and whether more funds are required are not. I wanted to visit last year but couldn’t, I would like to visit this year, but am not sure whether work commitments will allow this or not. I’ll contact the local government here to try and find out what the situation is and whether we need further action. I’ll also find out what the policy is regarding additional donations.

Sorry that it’s not so straightforward at the moment, but the last thing I want is for money intended for a good purpose going astray!

I hope this is OK for now – watch this space :)

slightly off topic but everytime the thread title comes up I read it wrong and burst out laughing.....:blast

hahahaha

there it goes again....:D

it's Dogging Holes, being dyslexic is bloody entertaining at times....:thumb2

hi dave
well, it seemded like a good idea at the time:blast

anyway if it is possible to donate to somewhere trusted, then maybe all is not lost....if not means I will have to keep reading the book and trying to avoid planning another long distance tour.....which might be an expensive way to get divorced!:augie

I know this thread is rather old, but I still get (amazingly!) regular requests for books, although both print runs have now long sold out. Based on a tip from one such request, I have now uploaded the book onto "Lulu". It is possible to get a printed version - these are rather expensive and I would like to point out that there is zero profit here - this price is purely Lulu's printing costs.

If you want the digital version (seeing how many here are discussing Kindles etc.), then it's on the same website, however I set the price as zero. This you can download here

The donation account for the orphanage is now closed. Since we set this up, the local government in Calarasi has changed no less than twice and all of out contacts have gone AWOL. Thankfully, the orphanage received a new roof before all the changes in the government, so at least they got some benefit.

.... I feel a ride back to Moldova is justified to see what's going on ;)
