Ok Guys this is a long shot, could a possible dodgy battery cause potentiometer readings to show side stand issues, wrong gear indicating and neutral problems. and of course sluggish starting, a r1200gs on 04 i have removed cleaned off gear indicator and side stand switches and they seen ok for a while then out of blue wrong gear indicating and side stand switch cuts engine even in neutral. am i expecting to much here..:bow .

Connect a car battery with jump leads and see if the switches read properly.
For about £5 you can get a digital voltmeter to stick on the dash.

Duff battery can throw up all sorts of faults on a GS so a good place to start. My gear switch plays up every now and then but a good dose of wd40 sorts it!
Let us know how you get on?

Same for me on my previous 06 GS, the gear potentiometer used to crud up nicely in the winter. It was a bit fiddly to get to and unplug, but a good flush with WD40 sorted it each time. I think they've moved or changed it on the TC, but I haven't had to look for where it is, because I don't have the problem now.

thanks guys i will get multi meter out and start going through circuits including earth connections, and i hate that bloody gear potentiometer what a stupid place to put any switch..
