It's a minefield out there http://www.classicdriver.com/en/bike/bmw-motorcycles/r100-rs/1977/115318 advertised as a genuine HPN machine.

I saved the original owners advert (I'm a sad git) when he sold it on ebay a few years ago. Built by Keith Townsend and no mention of HPN or the Paris Dakar rally.

This is the original Ebay advert:-

"First registered as a R100RS in 1977. Modifications as follows, Husky 500 upside down forks re-valved and sprung to suit bike. White power rear shocks. Swingarm lengthend by approx four inches. R80GS subframe modified and fitted together with GS seat. Stainless downpipes and modified Harris silencers (Not too loud, just right!!). Lightened flywheel and gas flowed heads.

Bad points, clutch slips under hard throttle. Cylinder heads not converted for unleaded.

I built this bike about 15 years ago and have toured, ridden it off road on many occasions and even raced it at Silverstone!!. If my memory serves me well I won the MCC Lands end class award on it twice.

It is a go anywhere do anything on it bike. Not for the novice or faint hearted. If you do not know your bikes do not mess me about with silly questions. It also comes with pannier frames and Krauser panniers.

Please feel free to view the bike, visit www.dcbutler.co.uk for our location and contact details. (The bike is currently at my shop.)"

Perhaps the dealer is acting in good faith on whats been declared to him?.

Unless you've called him and he's strung you along with a pack of lies.

Nice looking bike tho.:drool

I emailed him and asked what year and who rode it in the Dakar. ;)

Edit . . . . . He replied instantly asking which bike I was interested in. Lets see how this progresses.

Second edit. . . . here is his reply.

"Hi,

Yes I have just been out on it in fact. It was causing quite a stir with a man that owned it once on one of the forums and I have just logged on to put them in their place. I have all the documentation from HPN. I have been to some considerable trouble to authenticate the machine. I have rebuilt the engine and gearbox and also checked the internals are correct with HPN.

I bought the machine when working for an auction house from a very nice guy just of the M42. It was only when I started looking in to the frame spec and numbers did we work out it was fairly special. I think the previous owners are pig sick that they missed out on such an obvious machine. It has clearly had lots done since it raced and I will say that the tank/seat/bodywork is not original. I really did not pay a lot for it but am not stupid so I have been asking for offers over £5000.

I have had some huge interest this week on the bike and have a list of people to call back next week so if you are still interested then let me have your telephone number and I will call you."

Trying to flog an Airhead as something it isn't...................................:nono That's the trouble, there are hundreds of "specials" out there, some more special than others, but it is so annoying when folk try it on and bluster about how "special " the one they are flogging is, when it clearly isn't. To get a genuine HPN these days would cost between £25 and 30k for a full on freshly build machine. A set of forks from a crosser and a longer swinger/shaft do not a Dakar bike make. :comfort

That's pretty Naughty isn't it? I wonder what HPN would make of that?

I see the links disappeared now.

Nice looking bike though

Exhaust cans

Can anybody identify the cans fitted to this bike, they are just what I am looking for to fit my project.

(by seller, not Luke)

Seems fair enough :nenau

If he has that info, it could be factored in to the value of this bike....if it's suspect, then the bike is only worth what it is, which from Rob's pics, looks nice (as a non-airheader, I hasten to add)

What he's saying doesn't seem to contradict Rob's OP........and if he has done some research and found it's a bit more than mundane, good luck to him :nenau

The guy who advertised it on eBay a few years ago clearly says he built it himself out of a late 70's RS. No mention of hpn. There's even a run down of the parts used.

It's up for sale at offers over £5k. If it was genuine and he'd done his research then he'd know a genuine hpn wouldbe far in excess of that.
