There is a company in Thetford, Norfolk who can service/rebuild starters if that's any help. PM me if you need their details.

My starter suffered exactly the same problems as shown in khpossum's info...new starter from Moto-Bins is about £160 !!!! No P/X either. There have been numerous previous posts on this topic, but it is possible, apparently to use a starter from some Citroens, Fiats etc-don't know which exact Fiat models though.

Have a look on the BMW clubsite, put an enquirey up on there as there have been serveral articals in the Journal about these fitted to a few puegots Mikre
Fishwik is the man to ask so give it a try somone will help out. They a re the same as BM ones but cheaper.

Sounds like a good idea to get you home next time we run out of fuel pumps!!
(and we used to be friends till now!!) Rotation not a problem any auto
electrician will sort it out quickly motors piece of cake to reverse.

I know this is a bit of a useless reply (sorry! ) but when my starter motor recently failed (yes, the crumbly magnets thing) I took it out, put it in a plastic bag (very dirty it was!) and took it to BMW HK - they rolled their eyes and said that they would 'take a look at it'. They called me back the next day, and I went to collect it, expecting a big bill - a nice shiny new motor was what I was given - with no bill! They stated that the crumbly magnets was a known issue from a particular parts supplier and that they were replacing motors that had failed, only charging for the labour. As I had taken mine out myself, there was obviously no labour charge!

Just goes to show that sometimes they can be nice people ... well, they can!

Stuck a charger on it and its no different.. in fact the charger showed the battery was fully charged straight away...
