As per the thread title does anyone know how to contact Les Wassall please?

I have a failed (dipped) HiD 35w bulb in my R1200GS (2011) and I don't want to trust a BMW dealer to deal with it.

If 35w HiD bulbs are no longer available or if Les no longer stocks them, converting the present set-up to run LED bulbs would be my next move or even going back to a stock bulb, but that would be my least favourite option.

Thanks all.

Hid's aren't legal.

Leds on the other hand are, plug and play kits from various eBay Amazon outfits

You could go full led headlight conversion , for about £130 if recall

My suggestion, get a decent traditional bulb of decent power / colour temp, replace the hid, it is in theory illegal, so now the time is to do the delete as an appropriate moment. That HID is not an oem fitment, and could be dazzling on coming drivers even if it has provided good lighting and you like it's quality of light. Some time cak on my R1200GS, I had dealer fitted after market ones, but it wasn't long after that, that it was considered an mot issue.

That modification, could impact insurance too.

I thought that bikes had been omitted from the hid ban.

So how come my totally standard 2002 Mercedes CLK 500 had HID headlights then?
And my 1150GS was converted to HID by me via Les Wassel and his kit has passed the MOT for the last 8 years or so without a single mention? And my MOT place is mega strict.

My understanding is that fitting HID bulbs in a light fitting not designed for them isn't permitted (understandable TBH). It is permitted to change a complete non-HID headlight unit (ie bulb, holder, reflector & lens) with a compliant HID one.

Standard headlight unit, HID conversion and more importantly the beam spread didn’t change much at all which is what my MOT bloke said was the only thing he could fail it on. No issues whatsoever. :thumb2
He did say the main beam HID wasn’t as bright as the standard one but if it’s dark I use a nice pair of LED spotlights to accompany it. :thumb2

Probably because on the Merc , it had an auto headlight leveling & washing system, something that isn't fitted when you retrofit to another vehicle, which could lead to dazzling other drivers, and for cars the light regs at MOT time are different,

on the GS you stare straight at the bulb- its also right up at eye line

there is no deep projector lamp design with an HID inches back from you looking directly at it...
