... does this mean I should have done something other than replace the clear ones with the orange ones from the nice man at motorworks and then replace the orange lenses with the clear ones and everything worked fine first time (optional punctuation ,'.;:', please feel free to sprinkle)

Cheers. No you don't oblertone. It's just that vehicles designed for the orange bulbs have the offset pin layout so that you can't accidently fit orange bulbs under orange lenses. Have a look in the garage next time you fill up, the offshelf orange ones have offset pins and clear bulbs have opposing ones
