I have had a GS1250 TE for two years. It was an ex-demonstrator so only had a 2 year warranty which now needs renewal. I have had a lot of issues with this bike and five major trips back to the dealer for repairs and replacement parts under warranty plus a few other gremlins sorted at major service intervals. We even started a discussion on rejection of the bike with BMW! I have always put this down to it being one of the first new bikes in the UK that probably had a good few thrashings out of the box on test rides and the dealer has always been fantastic at sorting the problems out for me.

Anyway, am at the point now where the warranty needs to be renewed and I would be crazy not to given the bike's history but I think the better option would be to trade in for a new, replacement bike.

Is anyone else here onto their second 1250 yet? Am hopeful that the teething issues on early bikes like mine have been ironed out and that hassle free GS ownership nirvana is just a new bike order away.

Any thoughts welcome. Ta.

You could factor the cost of an extended warranty in to your cost to change plus the new ones have a 3 year warranty if that makes you feel any better ? :thumby:

Yes - am already doing that! Makes the decision easier. Will be going ahead with this but wondered if anyone else is in the same boat and has gone from turbulence to smooth running with a change of machine?

£400 ish per year for extended insured warranty , so with yearly increases say £1300 for an extra three years warranty.

Factor in your bikes part ex value plus how much it will cost you on top to buy new , it might be worth it if the new bike is trouble free.

Brother in law bought a used f850 gs ( ex bmw uk bike ) , it was 6 months old and came with the remainder of the manufacturers three year warranty rather than a two year used warranty

I agree it is worth it. It will be my old bike plus about £5.5K cash.

:)

Indeed. Although I am having a harder time calculating in an order for the new S1000R at the same time.

Dont forget the tyres that you would have had to buy for the old bike

Thats another £300 in the kitty

Happy to help

Ha!!! Yes, although new Roadtec 01's on the current bike mean that is tricky to shoehorn into the equation!

Just got a new 1250 in Dec, first was a 2019 Nothing wrong wuth it yet. Dont forget trade in values are still high at moment due to lack of production so may well be the best time to change

Thoughts ?
If I had ever had a bike that unreliable, I certainly wouldn’t be considering replacing it with the same bike in the hope that ‘teething troubles’ had been ironed out !
There is something about modern GS ownership that seems to bind the buyer to the brand, even when they have numerous issues with the bike.
Ok, agreed, BMW are very good at fixing things within warranty periods, but they do seem to get plenty of practice.

Unfortunately this seems to be the story for many early adopters, I remember the raft of owners going to and from their dealer when the LC 1200 first came out....and it was somehow a surprise :blagblah

I don't get how BMW keep so many going back time after time, if I'd spent that kind of money on a new 1250 and had the problems you've had I'd have rejected it in a heartbeat and bought something else from a different manufacturer, but I guess some people don't mind all of the issues to have the badge they love :comfort

We are all different aren't we? What would put you off is not the same for me. I think I got a dodgy one two years ago and the chances of the same experience being repeated are not high in my view. And the key thing that binds me to the purchase of another GS is that I think they are the best bike I can buy for my needs. The new V4 Multistrada is a temptation but nothing else is and I don't think the extra cost vs benefit of one would stack up.

Fixed it for you

I had a 64 plate early production R1200GSA LC TE which was an utter turd of a bike , nothing but issues from day one and BMW gave me an extra years free warranty (it cost them in 34 months over £5000 in parts, never mind the labour for the numerous ecu updates on suspension and GSAP.

The £3500 it cost BMW at 13,000 miles for two more replacement shocks and another left hand switchgear was the final straw, I wasn't going to spend my own money on a further warranty and would not in good conscience sell it on privately .

Part ex against a new special order specced up basic (te model without ESA ,gsap ,sos, keyless ) cost £5000 and it was the best money I ever spent

I have a 2019 r1250gs..... so far, ZERO problems in 10.5k miles....and hope to say the same after the next 10k...

ive a 1250 gsa 40th coming this month (hopefully). just got rid of my 2019 Africa Twin adventure sport - if you read reports on early ATs there were lots of issues with tank paint / weld quality / finish / rusty wheels etc. i did 10'000 miles in a year and it looked just as good when i sold it. put tyres on it and serviced it with no issues at all. would actually recommend them to anyone

im in the camp that (normally) lessons are learnt and things are improved. (might be me just taking a positive view as this is my first good week after covid).

Getting my second one soon... Replacement for rejected bike. The rejected one was one of the very last 2020 bikes. Better luck this time

Snelly55,I'm also on my second 1250.Went from a '19 ADV to a regular "19 GS with ADV suspension and black GS cast wheel$$$...Went from 30 liters / 100 miles more range to a slightly lighter bike...I don't know which is better or which route to go next because both , 100 miles more range as also 45 lbs less weight are equally good.I guess it is either more comfort/convenience or a little more agility !? Problems had neither as even my Hayes calipers where dry but still get replaced by Brembos come spring as part of a recall here...I hope the Brembos won't be spongy and have a short travel at the lever as the Hayes have...
