Does anyone know how to replicate the locks which secure OEM panniers to the rack?

I have a pair of ARDesign cases on my '11 GSA and mighty fine they are, but I want to fit a toolbox such as this one:

The problem is that the ARD case is fixed to the pannier frame by clamps which hook over the panner rails and, as far as I can work out, none of the toolboxes is compatible with anything other than the genuine panier fixing system (*). Whilst I can replicated the backplate on the OEM pannier which mates with the tongues on the rack I can't work out how to secure the pannier to the rack.

I can buy the OEM lock here: http://www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk...minium-case-right-side-r1200gs-adventure.html so it might be worth buying one and experimenting. The experimenting is dictated by the fact that the ARD cases have square corners unlike the OEM panniers.

Interestingly, they also sell the OEM panniers for an amazing price: http://www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk...1;86700;4971&gclid=CInU9-PT38QCFRHHtAodwV0AOQ so it might be easier to buy a set of genuine boxes and sell my ARDCases - which now appear to sell for not much less than the OEM panniers from the Motorrad store. Not sure how the Motorrad site can be so cheap when Vines want between £600 and £700 for the panniers on their eBay page.

* I'm happy (pleased!) to be told otherwise. Also, any suggestions as to how to secure my ADR cases to the racks with a fixing that does not protrude inside the tongues on the rails would be greatly received as I've become fixed on replicating the OEM fixing method to the extent that I can't think of an alternative.

Could you use the fittings which are on the Trax luggage,? You would need the brackets which are on the panniers themselves and locking end clasp.

That fitting is pretty much what I can build - it's the brackets and the locking end clasp which have stumped me.

It's a shame that no one seems to offer an end clasp as I'm sure that they would run off the shelves. Unfortunately I don't have the skill to make one :-(

Could you use Dzus fasteners going into the pannier frame lugs from inside the box?

I had a similar idea to fix a Givi plate to the BMW top case frame though never got around to trying it.

Hmm, hadn't thought about Dzus fasteners - am fixated on replicating the OEM system as I said! - will have a look at them. Unlocking the bottom ones with a full pannier would be a trial but, maybe a simple hook over the bottom rail and a pair of Dzus' for the top might suffice.

Internerd searching for 'alternative' clamping methods is hampered by inadquate knowledge of the correct names of stuff. Your Dzus suggestion has got me thinking about a type of overcentre clamp whose tension was adjusted by twiddling the locking lever before locking. The locking lever was a tear-drop chunk of anodised aluminium which, when tipped through 90 degrees to rest against the surface to be locked down pulled on a spring loaded pin which was hooked against the fixed surface. If you can think of a name for that you are a far better man that me, Gunga Din!

You are being far too helpful - that's what I like about UKGSer! I've seen the overcentre catches, but they rely on a separate hook plate. If I go down that route, I'll need an OC latch that will pull against the vertical tube of the pannier frame - like the OEM latch. I like the boat catches but 2" might be too large a cutout for the structural strength of the panier. What do you think?

I found these: http://store.skybolt.com/cloc-2600fw-series-folding-wing-c186.aspx which seem to be an improved version of the Dzus fastener and will send the manufacturere an email. I doubt that they will supply outside US :-( (Update: huge minimum order quantity. B****R)

Overcentre latches are what holds Jesse luggage on. Simple, fast and effective. Instead of a spring to hold the tension it is thick rubber washers, they also act as a seal. Since the levers are placed inside there is no need to make them locking.

The Jesse site doesn't show any pictures of the fitting method but I have sent their UK distributor an email. $150 to fit the panniers seems scary but if it works . . . .

For information only: my ARDCases are mounted using fixings that are very similar to those used by Touratech Zega cases.
 
My ARD cases are fitted to Touratech frames, not sure how similar they are to BMW fixings. They can be seen on the ARD cases website.
 
Did you see the image showing the locking end clasps on the motech panniers? If you are not familiar with them I can take a few pics of mine to show you. The bracket on the inner side of the pannier box,slots onto the bobbins mounted on the pannier frames.This then only needs the locking end hasp to secure the pannier.http://www.bykebitz.co.uk/motorcycl...ier-adaptor-kit-bmw-r1200gs-adventure-04.html

Thanks, my ARDCases are fitted to the OEM frames using the fixings which are similar to those used on the Touratech Zega cases, i.e. large 'hockey' puck affairs involving rotating steel straps and protrudung bolt heads!

Thanks Doyle. Interesting. I wonder if I can replicate that method of fixing. The problem, I think, is making something that the latch can hook too and which is attached to the existing pannier rail.

Yes it's Jesse luggage that I have. They have a couple of different mounting systems depending on bike and box chosen.
