Does it really need a service every 6k?

“The moral of this, (1) BMW servicing is pretty poor quality and not to be relied on….”

Just a sweeping statement or based on extensive research?
No, just a wealth of unfortunate events.

Fully agree with 6000 miles and or annual service just because I do not trust extended oil services and the ability of oil to last two or three years plus, I bought a used Audi A3 2.0 tdi with 45,000 miles on the clock that had a full Audi service history .

It had in that period of time 2 oil changes and guess what (despite doing an oil and filter change ) it suffered turbo failure due to previous lubrication issues within a few months .

My 1250 is 3 years old and is only staying BMW serviced to keep the Insured Warranty as I would not own a newer BMW without some sort of warranty in place , whether it be original BMW 3 year , 2 year Approved Used BMW or BMW Insured Warranty. just because with all my previous LC's I have had too many issues .
Yet you keep on buying them.

ah dearest Santa- if only you knew!
but then, you don't so I do understand that you have based your response on zero knowledge. - but thank you and have a fabulous day.
Yarkto - Wouldn't of even bothered replying to it. (y)
Was in my Dutch mates garage, He was showing me his new GSA. He then turned the ignition on and went to fire it up, It was minus 5. I stopped him, and explained the potential damage of running it, And not riding it to normal operating temperature. He dismissed my advice, But decided not to start it.
Next morning, We both sitting on our bikes, and fired them up. I then pointed to a puddle under his Exhaust flap. And dripping quite fast. He was flabbergasted by how much water came out. He's never started any engine since without running it properly.

Says the man who fastidiously poo pooed the driveshaft lubrication / failure issue, until it happend to him ;)

What happened ?
Ill tell you, Nothing. But BMW did fit a new shaft FOC.
I must admit though. There must have been an issue. But nothing to do with the splines. Which what i was disputing. The claim was, Grease your spines?
Oh God, lets not start this again :ROFLMAO:

Some interesting replies.
As said, many don’t do 6k a year so the annual restriction hits before mileage.
To be fair, in the past I’ve mostly had to get my bike serviced early as I’ll hit the service point while I’m away. Not the case this time but all going well I will probably have to next year.
I just thought it odd that the 6k service interval, as far as I’m aware, goes back many iterations of the boxer engine and with improved manufacturing and oil technology I’m surprised it hasn’t been extended.

I've done two services within three months. Every time I checked the valves, They didn't need any adjustment, So I only Checked them every 4 or so years.

This is similar to mine. In the 36K i've done in just under 3 years, only once has a valve adjustment needed to be made - and it was only one valve that was just out of spec.

It's down to how you ride it; spend lots of time in the upper rev range and it'll need more adjustment more frequently.

I’ve avoided dealer since second (warranty) service.

9 years and 50,000 miles later the bike is still purring like a pussy cat.

“Warranty” fears never mattered to me.

Annual DIY oil changes are easy. Plus all other simple service items.
I can’t change tyres :)

Got an independent expert to check my valves in March at 45K. No adjustment needed.

Dealer service only serves one purpose. Dealer dollars £££££££££

I know the R1200 inside out, I wonder how different the R1300 will be? I have checked to make sure my GS-911 is compatible.

I've only ever taken a GS to the dealers once. That was my first 1200, and was an Approved Used, never bothered since, and i'm now on my third.
I do an oil and filter every 6k miles, clean and re-oil my DNA filter, change the final drive oil, and if i'm board i'll do the brake fluid as well. All for a fraction of the cost of a dealer service.
I do change my own tyres, £500 for a brand new chinese tyre machine was one of the best buys i've ever made.

If it really needs a service is it not too late? Oil changes etc are done by their nature before they are needed. I’d rather change too early than too late. JJH

Sorry , maybe i should have entitled the thread,
Has the oil degraded significantly more at 8 thousand miles than 6 thousand miles to require new oil at 6 thousand miles and would it not still have the required qualities at 8 thousand miles. ;)

Of course you could get it tested!!! JJH

Funny you should say that, i have actually done oil analysis in the past. Probably cheaper just to get the bike serviced.
