Does mileage matter that much on an 1150gs?

Hi all,
I'm interested on your collective thoughts on the above. I have an F650GS and want to change up to an 1150GS :thumb , but, combining a yet-to-be-determined sale price for the F, I'm restricted to spending no more than Stg6000 / Eur8500 and, in the current market, that limits me to probably nothing younger than an 02 model. I know, you're going to say "if only you could get another grand together....", but that's it, its not going to happen. Not located in the UK, so really only looking at dealers at present - I guess private is an option, but are there anything that I need to specifically consider if I go down that route. I was looking at this one but 32k miles is clearly a fair few on a 3.5 yr old bike, but is it likely to be too much? It has a full service history, which is some comfort, but nonetheless, should I try to get a 01 (perhaps from Germany www.mobile.de) with lower miles/km? Anyways. it a bit academic until I sell the F, but I'd appreciate any informed opinions out there.
Thanks in advance

Mines on 34000 and has been very reliable:

New rear paralever bearing, cheap and easy to do.
New discs all round - the rear went very early, annoying and expensive.
2 rear brake light bulbs
Much oil :D

Thats it. Still on the original battery!

Sarge,
...."much oil" thats what I'm concerned about - does engine wear create crankcase pressure the causes blow-back into your airbox - its happened to a few of my bikes in the past with reasonable mileage up on them.

Not on mine :nenau

1150's use a lot of oil - it's just nature of the beast! Many owners reckon their oil consumption drops when the bikes' run in (20,000 miles?), mine may have dropped a little - hard to be sure, but the oil-sight glass is something you'll learn to keep your eye on. Nothing to worry about, it's a strong bike - go for it :thumb

Would of thought that as long as the bike has all the regular servicing and been fairly well looked after, should be ok, i got mine from SPC (see the dealers section) last October and i am still :D
the one your looking seems to have all the right bits - go for it

The mileage is only really an issue when you come to sell it. Other buyers will have the same concerns as you have now. I think there's a big drop in value once a bike hits 40K miles so if you change bikes regularly (2-3 years) the 31K bike may lose a lot.

Having said that it is very hard to find a low mileage GS. They are bought to be used. I was very lucky to find a 2001 with 7.5K miles after weeks of searching.

Lookin at a 2000 1150 gs on 44k miles ..........thanks for the info guys ........it may well get itself bought

I saw that 1150 when I was at SPC this morning.

It's in excellent condition.

And the bike has done 10k miles a year.

That's not huge, especially if they can show full BMW dealer servicing.

Mines a 01 with 65000 on the clock from new, bullet proof, alternator belt broke the other day, thats it really. Watch the oil. Germany is always a good option when looking to pick on of these up. Best of luck.

bought that 1150gs...................

which needed a new battery.....dealer sorted me out with a new bmw gel battery, and now happiness has been restored..................

Welcome aboard. Mine's an SPC import and apart from the corrosion on the fork brace and amazing rusting mirror stalks it's been okay.

It's generally been BMW serviced since I had it although not always at the exact mileages. From now on it will go to Steptoe's.

I've not quite cracked 30000 although if I add the 4000kms fromt he original German speedo on it has!
