does your rear wheel spin freely?

Hi, bit of a dumb question with a shaft drive, but how 'free' should the rear wheel spin?

My '03 1150 GSA had a new final drive unit fitted (under warranty thank god!) but ever since its felt bit tight, sluggish and rough. I've done a few miles now to see if it bedded down but its still not good. I've also noticed that my fuel consumption doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be - not by much but makes me think that if the rear wheel is dragging then that might account for it?

My rear wheel is quite stiff to turn so I just wonder if this is 'normal' or not? Gnerally my bike feels a lot more vibey than it used to (especially at 5000 revs) and if i'm doing 30mph in 3rd the engine feels like its pulsing with power.

Any ideas?? Its still under warranty so I guess the simplest solution is to take it back!

The simplest solutions are generally the best.

Never had the problem myself, but there was a post recently about driveshaft phasing that may be relevant.

Either way, you're still better off taking it back to the dealer that did the work, assuming that it was a dealer or a trusty independant of course.

Hi thanks for the advice - yes a well respected local dealer did the job so I'll take it back. Feels like the driveshaft is out of balance (I only have a similar experience from my old Triumph Spitfire to go by!) so maybe a phasing problem.

Not the rear brake dragging is it?.
Is the disc/caliper hot after a ride?.
Those "pulses" may be a warped disc.
2 bolts,lift the caliper clear and recheck the feel of the rear wheel.

Hi Colban, - thanks for the tip - will check it out. Took it down to the dealer yesterday and they had a quick look. Didn't see what they did but almost immediately it 'felt' better to ride and when I got home the rear wheel is spinning more freely - so I'm thinking the rear brake was binding. They told me to ride it over the weekend and see if if feels OK so I'll do the check and see if it feels like a warped disc.

There's still a low down rumble which seems to be coming from the driveshaft area (hard to tell precisely) and so I wonder if this might be something to do with the new final drive they put on?
