Just replaced big outer bearing and the 2 needle rollers in bevel box on 1150gs 03. To fit them i removed the short input shaft, all together now but reading the manual (after job done:augie)it says i should line things up after removing the crown wheel? Anyone tell me if its neccesary after only replacing those 3 bearings it seems to work but dont want to ruin the box. thanks

What the book is talking about is "phasing" the UJs.
Ie,making sure that the UJ at the bevel box end is in line with the UJ at the gearbox end.Cant tell you what happens if the bike is ridden any great distance with the UJs out of phase as i dont know.Try a search on "phasing" or wait until someone else has more info.
Found this info.

who knows

Thanks Colban for info bit worried now as going for ride this afternoon and like you say "Cant tell you what happens if the bike is ridden any great distance with the UJs out of phase as i dont know."
I may be able to tell you later . Just hope its good news and i have been lucky enough to put them back somewhere near right!:thumb2

Am I right in thinking the later 1150 ADVs have a 'master spline' to ensure correct phasing?

If you have to line them up,first remove the bevel unit and, with a torch, look up the swinging arm tunnel and see if you can observe the gearbox end UJ.
Orientate it so its vertical, engage 1st geat so it cant turn too far (use 1st as a stop, either c/wise or anti c/wire with shaft vertical).
I fit the bevel box UJ into the drive shaft first, checking the alignment with the other UJ,and only far enough into the shaft so its a bit easier to engage with the bevel box spline.Bitch of a job really.
If you cant see down the tunnel to get a satisfactory line up,i guess its time to remove the rear shock and swinging arm and fit shaft so it's vertical.:(
Worth marking the 12-o-clock position on the other end of the shaft in case it moves.Good luck.

u j

you should have took it round to GLYN,S he has more tool,s
check if there is a master spline when you take the shaft back out i would have thought it would have had a master spline

p/s good game today (DIANE)
