Hi, bought an '05 GS about 10 weeks ago - very pleased with it - a bit different to the ZZR1100 I had before.

However I've noticed a distinct smell of petrol after I've fuelling up. It is as if there in an intermitent fuel leak 'cause some days the garage stinks & other days all's OK. I've dad a look round but can't find anything (mighty ). It doesn't seem to matter how much petrol in in the tank. Has anybody had a similar 'problem' - any suggestions please?

Hi, I had the same problem, then realised that I had been riding around for two days will the fuel cap slightly open!

It looked closed, but wasn't.:blast

Give it a good firm push down with the key removed until it clicks.

been guilty of this a few times :o

could be that

reminds me of what happened once with my Dakar...

...I was going (a bit on the fast side) down a street and eventually stopped at a traffic light... some guy with a Transalp I think was yelling something under his helmet pointing at me... "what's wrong with the guy, did I do something to him?"... then I heard him yell that fuel was dripping from somewhere, ON MY EXHAUST and my exhaust was setting it on fire so I was leaving fireballs behind as I was running!

My fuel cap was not correctly closed. Could have made a nice torch of myself. Ah... the virtues of fuel cap on the side and outside the primary view of the rider... BMW rulez.

Ive had the same....................cap not closed properly :blast

Now i always close it, then give it a bang with my hand to be certain!

Thanks for the replies. I have thought it might be that, 'cause it has happened to me a couple of times - but each time I fill up I now double-check that the cap closed properly - so I've ruled that out as well. I tell you I'm pretty stumped with this one. Think I'll leave it to the dealer (Southport Superbikes) to investigate - it's just that it's not round the corner from N Wales - but there again it's a ride out !

I had a petrol smell problem throughout my ownership of my 1150. And as my garage was integral with the house it was a big deal.
Mine was coming from the tank breather (exiting by the right footpeg). Don't know why, and never cured it (replacing all lines etc). Once bike was cool there was no smell.
I suggest you get a container of water and see if your breather pipe bubbles. I could stop mine in about 6" of water so it wasn't exiting under any great pressure.
I solved the petrol smell problem by attaching a breather pipe (exiting outside the garage) every time I parked up:rolleyes:

I've noticed the same thing and like you always double check the cap. I think the breather suggestion maybe worth trying. I'll be doing this next weekend, no used mine for 2 weeks in a locked garage so I'll see. I once spilt some fuel when refuelling and that smelt for ages till i washed it off. could it be that?

Good suggestion: but I've not spilled any fuel recently (being a skinflint it's too fecking expensive to waste !!)

The breather sounds a possibility: I'll have a good look at that & let you know how I get on.
