DOHC Cylinder protection

I've got the BMW metal ones which have seen some action and saved the cylinder head covers a few times.

I've always wondered whether plastic ones would dig in rather than slide and possibly lead to more damage?

looks can be decieving but they look like the type of placcy that will split ahd shatter when subjected to heavy (1200gs rated) impacts... ps opinion based on looks and ad alone :)..
further thought: are they going to act like mittens for the head and keep it warm(er) too.

That was what my gut feeling said as well... however the plastic used is really tough Nylon ABS stuff and I've seen a 2008 GS that slid down a road on the side and apart from the grooves and scratches, no shattering and they did indeed protect the cylinder....

Now I wonder if there's a chance of these blokes having more pictures and perhaps a video showing the cover's protection capabilities?

Have been eyeballing these polymer protectors from Machineart............. good idea or not?

My GSA has previously decided a couple of times to fall asleep while on the job.... no major damage but scratches nevertheless.....

Hi haven't tested these in a slide however my bike came off the stand recently and the protector shattered and provided little or no protection....damaged cover now :blast

Dave - thanks for the comment mate.

I also had the "plastic" concerns as the concept in principle is sound. So emailled them and got the following response:

"A plastic formulation that is too stiff has a low impact break strength. X-HeadDOHC are molded in nylon designed specifically not to provide a rigid barrier but to flex slightly with its inner rubber liner to absorb the force of an impact. The material has a no-break Charpy Impact Test rating as a result. "
