After waiting years to catch a place I'm finally doing a BikeSafe day on Sunday in Dorking, Surrey.

Anyone else done one there, what are the crowd like?

I'm a bit nervous about it but also looking forward to learning lots so am grateful for any tips you can offer if you've already done one.

Hopefully the weather will hold out and it will be £50 well spent.

Did mine a few years ago in Hants, gotta rebook one soon.

Ride sensibly, show the assessor your skills and be receptive to their assessment and advice and you'll have a great day out.

I did one last year, well worth it, the local council paid for mine, I would like to do more training but the IAM seem rather stuffy.

Dear all.

I'm just back from our Regional Bike Safe event at Sparkford, Somerset, when many riders of all types and backgrounds, went for a short taster ride-out with a class 1 Police biker.

I recently took a client out on one of our Better Biking observations, and from this he has grown in confidence, decided on a more modern bike and will possibly be taking his development further. Also an associate of mine, will be going for his IAM advanced test.

Bike Safe is there to bridge the gap from your test to Advanced training and Instruction, either via those who are on the post test training register, such as that already mentioned on in this thread or IAM or Rospa to name but a few.

In any event I know that whatever a person chooses to do, will be of great benefit and will make your riding so much safer and enjoyable.

Best wishes

Well I had a fantastic day today and am absolutely knackered now from trying to take so much in.

Weather was great, all the observers were very friendly and relaxed and the feedback was always positive and constructive.

Started at 9am with about and hour of briefings, videos, intros, expectations and then we spilt into groups. I was in a small group of 2 riders, 2 observers (there were 11 attendees in total).

We were taken on some great roads around Dorking, Shere, Ripley, Guildford and took turns in following and observing and being observed, so see how they do things then try and do them yourself.

We stopped every 30-40 mins for a quick de-brief and plan of the next section of riding. I picked up a huge amount on observation, planning, road positioning and got very complimentary feedback on my riding which I was pleased with.

Lunch at 1pm at Rykas which was heaving with a few hundred scooters on some sort of rally. Off again at about 1.45 for more of the same then back to Dorking police station by 4pm so a very long day but well worth it.

I'm definetly going to take this further and am looking at Wey Valley or Thames Vale Advanced Motorists to do my IAM test.

Mine cost £50 and that paid for lunch, a copy of the Police roadcraft handbook we got a free DVD and sidestand puck but to be honest I reckon the skills are worth the £50 alone. Anyone considering this should do it, it's easily the best money I've spent on my bike so far. www.bikesafe.co.uk.

What was the name of your observers?

I was on it too...

Hi Steve,

I was there too - on the Mag. F800GS.

I have to agree - it was a GREAT day, worth every penny, and more. I learnt so much. Having only passed my test in November and got my first bike in Jan. I felt I really benefitted from this course.

Great 'observers' who offer constructive feedback and obviously truly enjoy motorcycling themselves.

I'm certainly going to follow up with IAM, RoSPA or similar.

They did mention that they were full for the rest of the year but could put on additional days if sufficient people were interested.

:clap Good to see that you had a great day and weather, hope you go one and do some more advanced stuff.

I'd definitely recommend joining the IAM group. Not only will you pick up more riding tips to build on what you learned on BikeSafe, you'll join a group who's whole reason for being is to go out and enjoy their bikes! If you want to ride to a good standard at a quick pace and go places and meet people, I'd recommend it.
