don't buy the sony walkman

Had a NW-A3000 when it first came out and had to use the old Sonic Stage as the Connect was totally unusable. But the updates have now fixed the issues it had and it works now better than Sonic Stage.

If anyone does get one the first thing they need to do is use the update facility to get the latest version. They have just released a new Firmware for the player too.

Its a pity that Sony couldnt get it right to start with as the player is excellent and was let down by the software. :nono

Sony insist on using their compression system, I have just had my HD1 firmware upgrade allows MP3's to be put straight on it, appears as removable media in my computer. I think the HD3 onwards now all come as MP3 compatible.

Does anyone know what software is used on the Sony-Ericcson Walkman phone. I'm thinking of getting one, and was hoping to be able to just copy mp3 files over as though it was just another removable storage device.

I bought one of these for my daughter. The software seems OK, but do we have to keep a copy of all the music loaded on the walkman on the hard drive?

My son has an iPod - and I ask the same question.

Having to keep several Gb worth of music on the hard drive for these two seems a waste of time, but if we don't keep it, next time we synchronise the Sony walkman everything is deleted !!!

Use Realplayer10 to drag and drop to a walkman - much better than Sony rubbish.

that's the first time i've EVER heard a recommendation for real player

is it better now?

With the ipod it'll try and keep both in sync if you have it set to automatic in ipod preferences. If it's set to manual then you could in theory lose the copy on disk. (I've used those terms loosely as I haven't got the ipod bit installed on windows, just my mac at home. The actual menu options might be called something else).

Keeping them on the disk isn't a big deal though, I got an external disk to use for my music repository. - how much space are we looking at?

I tend to think of CD's as my backup copies these days and treat the repository as the main copy.

No, just go to Tools/Preferences and change the sync to manual. Then you can 'remove' music files from the Connect Player Library and delete them from your hard disk. You can get them back usually from the walkman to the hard disk if you need to.

"Can't you just use it like an ordinary USB storage device, and copy the MP3s over?"

Hmm, never tried this. To be honest I'm scared of trying anything on it cos it's so unstable..

I've got a solid state sony device and yes it does have the sonic stage as packaged software - however, if you connect via USB, the player appears as another drive. On that drive is some MP3 software which you can use to import your MP3's direct onto the player. No need to convert to ATRAC or whatever they call it.

Get yourself a Rio Carbon really easy to load music with the supplied software or just drag and drop. 100 times better than an ipod mini (that's a saga you don't want to hear about) and better software that the new Sony.

All IMHO

On Judge's recommendation I bought an iRiver H10 6gb for my daughter. Excellent piece of kit, uses simple drag & drop to move stuff to and from the PC. Also has a radio, voice recording and can be used for text and photo storage. Doesn't need a separate charging cradle (unlike the Ipod which can only be charged via the USB if you don't spend more money on the charging cradle). Comes with a nifty little case (unlike some other players where you have to buy one). Sound quality is very good, all in all a good buy :thumb

And what does your daughter think of it? Doesn't sound like she's got her hands on it yet :D

Till the volume wheel snaps off like my mates did ... very interesting to take apart ... not...

My ipod mini kicks it up and down the street for sound quality and unbreakableness ... so far...
