Don't buy this workbench

It was under £60 off eBay. It might make an OK wallpaper-pasting table, but it's all made out of cheese and won't take any rufty-tufty work.

I've started dismantling it, and will be taking it to the dump.

But I'm really pissed off. It was the perfect size for the space I have available and I spent 2 evenings assembling it. All wasted!



I'm now searching for what I should have bought in the first place.

I've got some cheap shelving in the workshop made of the same wibbly wobbly stuff, however, once bolted into the wall it's as solid as a solid thing - just a thought

The workbench was much stiffer when all assembled. My mistake was half-standing on it. It is now banana shaped.



PS Yes, I know I'm a heavy b'tard, but most of my weight was on the step ladder at the time. Hmm, that might mean I'm even heavier than I thought!

Don't dump it man!!

Just get some perforated angle iron......every other builder's skip will have some in or it's cheap as chips, whack some on the legs and under the bench, tack weld it up or use 8m SS nuts n bolts and it'll be solid as solid can be

Me too!

I fear that if I were to weld a couple of feet of angle iron on the bent section, the legs would buckle from the extra weight.

This item is so cheesy everywhere that you'd end up simply hanging an entirely new bench around the cheese of the original.

On this occassion, I think it's far easier to accept that I've dropped a real bollock on selection. Time to cut my losses; clear the decks and start again.

Work bench? Go to the builders merchant for some 2x2 softwood and some 18mm ply. Much stronger and will fit cos you'll make it so.

We've just taken in a dozen or more tables from a college that was having a clear out.......designed for teenagers to use, so they're pretty strong

I've converted two to workbenches and the rest are surplus to requirements if anyone wants one...collection only mind.

Agreed.
I made mine or of 2x2. Tis 4m long, and enables youto cutom to your own height.
I used decking boards for the top, and bottom shelf. Just screwed them on smooth side up.

Pop into a fabricator and get them to cut some 40mm box steel and weld it up.
Top with a sheet of 25mm mdf or an old door with a sheet of ply.
You will have a proper bench for life.
