Double hard Wild Wild West event

Question for those marginally more local then me;

Normally I’d head over Rannoch Moor on the A82 but it’s snowing up by the Glencoe ski centre and at the Kingshouse so best described as sub-optimal for an RT but I’ve never turned left at Tyndrum and used the A85 then A828 so is it a sensible option or just a pointless meander on crap roads eventually leading to a U turn? :blast

And the snow gate cams

+ the met office

at 9:3- am this morning the A82 was looking interesting,

now it just looks wet

Hopefully the same for weds when i head up that way

I think that's the road I took on my way to Strontian a couple of years ago as I was overnighting in Oban. I certainly took a left turn at Tyndrum. Fabulous biking road but a bit of an extended trip for you, and I rode it in warm weather, then followed the coast road from Oban to Strontian.
Good luck and godspeed.:thumb2

PS, try the Cullen skink if you call in the Green Welly, it's wonderful.:drool

I’ll get everything ready and load the bike this afternoon then have a look at the cameras in the morning because it’s a long way to go only to find the gates are closed and if I have to take the longer route I’ll be struggling to get there in daylight.

I suppose the intelligent option is to see how it’s going then if time is against me stop somewhere like Tarbert tomorrow night rather than push on and end up on narrow little roads after dark or worse still, find the ferry has finished for the day when I get there.

Hope to be there mid to late afternoon tomorrow (27th) :thumby:

Ride/drive carefully now yahear :thumb2

There's weather warnings for the next couple of days Andy. Taking a coastal route would make sense. If you take the OBAN road at Tyndrum, turn right at Connel and head for Benderloch and on to the Corran ferry. It's closed today but should be open tomorrow. Closed again on Ne'rday and 2 January.

I'm doing it in 2 legs -

Home to Moffat day 1, and then Moffat to Strontian day 2

that way i can see how far i can get,

Mind you the forecast is rain and more rain lol

Interesting, only another 25 miles in routes terms, but another hour on the journey.

May have to take that option weather dependant

Cheers

I’ve got it mentally logged in case the faster route is either shut at the snow gates or I just decide I’ve got time so might as well play it safe. I’ve been over Rannoch a lot of times when I used to go climbing in Glencoe and on Ben Nevis so I know how mean it can get and there’s a very good reason for those snow gates.

Everything before that is ok as long as the traffic is moving and the options are there to stop in a multitude of places with my preference being to get north of Glasgow if I’m going to stop for an overnighter tomorrow night. It’s one of those cases where I’ll see how it looks and if needs be I’ll stop for a coffee and open up booking.com :D

Sorry, going to have to bale out...we both have the usual seasonal lurgy at the moment and feel pretty rotten so there's no point in spreading the germs !

And I don't have any heated clothing, need to do something about that.

Take care if you are on 2 wheels :beerjug:

If I’d got heated grips and a plug for my jacket on my Husqvarna I’d be on that rather than teetering around on a lardy 1200RT or maybe I should have kept my GS road legal but you have to play with the cards you’ve been dealt :blast

I was mildly surprised to find that I’ve completely filled a pannier with an Exped and a 4 seasons sleeping bag because I used to get both in one side of my Wolfman throw over panniers but I’ve got a top box the size of the boot on a small car for clothes, a second pannier for cooking gear and some food if I can find the boil in the bag stuff I had left over after the summer then I’ll put spare gloves etc in my tankbag so I’ll be ok.

Hopefully you’ll both be feeling better in a day or so but winter camping when you’re already under the weather is no fun at all.

I was beginning to wonder at your sanity Mike . . . and my own cos I was considering running through with you for a ride out

Like you, her indoors and myself have both got "the lurgy", so I can stand meself down from a very cold run there and back again.

Both of our lads have benifitted though - all the christmas/boxing day grub has been split between them :thumb

Safe journey to all that are going to the meet - stay warm and safe.

I’ve just had a peep at the cameras operating at Tyndrum and it’s really not getting any better. If the snow stops and then holds off it’ll be ok once it’s been ploughed but if the snow keeps up I can’t see them not shutting the gates.

I’ve got everything ready, the panniers, top box and roll bag with the tent in it are lying on the floor of our conservatory and I’ll be up at 8am to have a look at what’s happening. Fingers crossed it’ll be ok :hippy

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of our lives .... bier waiting in Micky Mini Mansions

Take care

:beerjug:

Just checked all the cams and forecasts

looks like wet and cold as the flavour of the run up

just get this cup of coffee down me, some final checks and i'll be off in the next hour or so

See you there :)

Yep, that’s my take on it as well. Late yesterday the roads looked nasty but they were obviously ploughed overnight so I reckon I’ll be away by 9am or soon after.

I’ve put a 2l stainless steel flask full of porter in my tent bag so that’s tonight sorted :beerjug:

A9 at Perth is black, little bit of white off to the sides. I’m heading home before heading across
From Blair Atholl it’s white

Screenshots taken just now ...

Tyndrum looking a bit dodgy but the A85 at Dalmally looks better.

Good luck guys!
