Downgrading from R1200GSA to F700GS = foolishness ?

Thank you, that's a reassuring remark. Please don't get me wrong, I do love the 1200s but I'm 62 now and I have a right knee that plays up regulary and I can't mess with the weight of an Adventure.

I'm guessing you have been through a few steering head bearings and wheel bearings along the way?

How do you manage your chain? How often do you have to lubricate it and adjust it?

I still own a '92 r100r which has a full BMW screen, paddle indicators, excellent headlight, Corbin seat and BMW touring panniers. I don't need to even think about panniers, better screen etc on the 650 as I have the r if I want to go camping or plough down a rainy motorway in the middle of winter :-)

I have a BMW insurance policy that insures the main bike (for £177) and allows three more for £10.50 each.

My fleet will now be 2011 F650, 1992 r100r and a 2002 C1 125

Regards

Phil

Thats a nice fleet!

I have been through two head bearings, just had it done. As for wheel bearing only one rear wheel. I Have a scotoiler so jsut fill it up and last between 600/1000 miles depending on the flow rate I have set. Adjustment wise not often at all, partly due to the scotoiler.

I'm only 27 but also have a dodgy knee. I enjoy how easy to handle my 650 is. Evan two up with luggage I can U-turn without a problem. Off to Austria on her in july!

Thank you - I'm even more reassured now.

After 40,000 miles it must be the right bike, my 92 boxer has 48k on it !

I'm fully behind BMWs and if there are better bikes out there I really don't want to know.

By the way the Anniversary f650 I'm buying has 300 miles on the clock, I'm aware that could be causing more problems than it solves but I simply could not resist the colour (no red seat though - it has a comfort seat fitted)

Nice, they are lovely in that colour. Shame bout the seat but the comfort seat is a big improvement compared to the standard! Enjoy and make sure you upload a pic!

I had a comfort seat on my SE and I am no fan of the red seat anyway.

I'm happy with what I'm buying. :bounce1

Mt 1200 GS was in for a service last week and the dealer loaned me a 700 GS for the day. First impression was that it was really small but I think that was part due to a low seat. The 700 was much more fun than the 1200 and no slower in most situations. Probably not quite as comfortable and less wind protection. I don't have thoughts of abandoning the 1200 for something smaller but I know I wouldn't have a problem swapping to a 700.
