Draining oil from R1150GS

Now I'll the first to admit that I'm not particularly mechanically minded, but even I can manage an oil change - or least I have been able to on my previous bikes.

My 1150GS seems a real pig to drain though?? For starters the sump plug is sandwiched between the cylinder head and the exhaust down pipe, which means that the oil will drip straight on to the pipe - I've had to make a funnel to get round this. I can't seem to get the plug completely out either because of the exhaust pipe. And nothing comes out at all unless the engine is up to running temperature, and even then it's v. slow. Oh, and why is the plug on the opposite side to the centre stand so I can't even lean the bike the wrong way.

Now either the Germans really haven't thought this through properly, or more likely I'm unscrewing the wrong plug or missing something very obvious, in which case those reading this will be thinking what the ****???!!

Can anyone help a clean handed desk jockey with the most simplest of tasks...??

Cheers - begs the question as to what I've been un-screwing then...

btw

i had a quick search and could not find anything that would help....sorry.

Once you have the bash plate off...all be become apparent. you need a special tool to change the filter...about £10 from Motorworks or similar....

Good luck.

Step away from the vehicle,

If you are unable to tell what is and is not an oil drain plug then please don't touch as it will all end in tears if not A&E.

Could be you are undoing the right hand cam chain tensioner?
Can't think of any other bolts that that could be confused with oil drainage.

That'll be the one then...cheers for that. Off to buy a service manual. I take it the fact I've undone this a couple of times mistaking it for a sump plug isn't going to cause me a problem...??!

Yes yes I know...reminds me of the time I tried to replace the brake pads on my XJ600, and caused the brake fluid reservoir to overflow and eat through the fairing. Saved £30 on the brake pad change, caused £200 damage to the bike...

Off to go and find my sump plug...

Recommend you put it back together as it was and MAYBE start again after you've read the 'kin manual :D

Thanks - if I end up with my bike in bits this weekend I may well drop you a line!

Don't feel bad - Had a mate who was legendary for being a terrible mechanic. Once overfilled his bike with oil so bad it was pissing out of every orifice, and wouldn't run. When asked how much oil he had put in he said "to the top!". Meaning till it was overflowing out the filler............5+ litres in a bike with a 3 litre oil capacity.

Also once "straightened" a wiring loom as it looked messy. And many other stories of calamity. :P
