Driveshaft vent service campaign - good workmanship by Bahnstormer Alton or not?

Hmmm, I asked for the splines to be cleaned and greased and they fobbed me off with 'oh it's all included'. Turns it wasn't and they didn't carry out my request for which I was happy to pay for. They talked to me like I was wasting my time asking.

Interesting, I made the same requested. Work was carried out and didn't have to pay, plus they made a video as proof:cool:

Well somebody was having an off day when I was there. The service manager is in receipt of a comprehensive email from me - again. He's managed to avoid answering my previous mail for a week so now he's had that re-sent with this new problem raised in addition. I'll be giving him a call in the morning.
Not impressed with them at all. While I was there collecting mine there another customer in discussion with him and he was clearly 'handling' a situation.

Was there any evidence of the grease used for sealing the boot? As somebody here said, mine looked 'as dry as a hangmans eye'.

Has anyone who was required to fork out a labour contribution for driveshaft replacement been re-imbursed ?

Emailed Bahnstormer whilst on hols mentioning the forum. Came home to a small envelope with a rubber bung in it!
I’ll fit it and see how long it lasts
Williams in Manchester were the dealer I purchased the bike from, and the e mail reply was from them - 110 mile round trip

Called into Halliwell Jones Motarrad in Chester today - 33 mile round trip

Both were more than helpful

Just done mine. Let´s see for how long the rubber valve will stay in place. No scratches on the shaft housing as I brought fabric tape (used to wrap wiring harness) and asked mechanic to put it on the spots where claws will grab the housing. He did it and left not a single mark on the housing (swing arm).

Just had mine checked and couldn’t be happier with Marshall BMW Grimsby.

I gave Jess the service manager (ex- bike mechanic) instructions that if all of the external checks proved to be okay I still wanted them to strip the rear housing and grease up the splines and I’d pay for it.

The price Jess quoted was £36.00 to strip and lube the splined shaft.

When I collected the bike she said that when they drilled the hole for the drainage bung one drop of water dripped out, so this required a visual inspection.

Mechanic Paul inspected and lubed the splines and even though I’d offered to pay for this procedure the bill came to zero!

10/10 For Marshall at Grimsby, I was well impressed!

MY Bike was in at Bahnstormer today to get a major service, and at the same time to the shaft check. As my bike is on 38K miles the shaft gets replaced regardless if there's a fault of not. I think they said the mileage threshold was 36K for getting the shaft replaced without the check being carried out.

My 2018 GSA went in for it's MOT last week and as part of the service Bahnstormers (Maidenhead) checked the shaft and did the drainage valve recall. As a result they advised that both the bevel gear and rear shaft require replacing... All under warranty and booked in for next Friday... Bike has 10500 miles on it..

Don't bode well for my gs1250 triple black 70 plate with 12300 miles when it gets serviced in October

My 21 plate has 10200 on it , be interesting to see what happens service time.

Why dosen't it bode well, do you have some tidbit of info that we dont??

Your speculating on something that may not have or even happen ( ed)

It`s shocking that a bike with 10K on it needs these parts replacing.

What exactly is the issue with the driveshafts that make BMW replace them either at the time of the check/drain install or as DJ123 has alluded to if the bike has over 36K?
Is it corrosion/fretting at the splined joint with the final drive (in which case if the shaft splines has suffered then surely the final drive pinion splines will have too in all cases?) or is it at the other end - the UJ?

10500 miles over 5 years implies less usage than 12300 in 2 years if the 5 year old bikes needs new uj, bevel gear etc .
I have no insider information and will just wait and see

.. and for those bikes which don't yet have high miles yet nearing the end of the warranty and thus don't get the parts replaced, does that mean that they will be expected to have a high chance of failure when they have clocked up the 36k miles? Bang go the residual values!

my r1250gs was in jeffries the other day the 12000 mile service done ,oil and filter, plugs, airfilter, brake fluid and valve gaps done, they have also done the bung in the bottom ,nothing to report or replace.oh hang on they did change a cam chain tenioner.
that said when i first bought the bike 15 months ago (new) the first thing i did was to grease the splines, yes they were bone dry from new

Well this serves BMW right…what were they thinking trying to build shaft drive bikes with no experience….bound to end in disaster…..no, wait, hold on!!!

Seriously, who would of thought that after all the years, nay decades of prematurely failing final drives for one reason or another they still cannot get it right. Other manufacturers have had this nailed for so long I just do not understand why BMW can’t get this right. The customer is clearly the accountants rather than the rider….really poor.

Just got my 1200 GSA back from the dealers tonight 15300 miles and it failed the driveshaft test so a new £600 shaft was fitted and the vent rubber was also done, the guy said only 2 police bikes with 44000 miles have passed the test and every used bike in stock has failed so far. It makes you think as no GS/GSA going back to 2004 had a drain vent and how many shafts have been replaced at the owners cost, i just hope no riders have been injured due to a shaft failing, if these were cheap chinese bikes fair enough but even they have to be fit for purpose. I told the dealer i had a European trip booked and he would be responsible for any breakdown etc. as he didn't want to test my bike but said it would get done at the next service
