Driveshaft vent service campaign - good workmanship by Bahnstormer Alton or not?

If your bike is out of warranty, do you have to pay for the check and replacement of the drive shaft? It's a safety recall, right?

Its a technical campaign, totally unrelated to a safety recall, if your bike meets the qualifying criteria,

next time it goes in for a dealer visit, the campaign action will be carried out if your bike meets the qualifying criteria

(all costs including any replacement parts are covered - but only for the the technical campaign)

I asked my dealer today whilst I was waiting for my scooter to have it’s first service next door

He said they’ll do it next time I bring the (2016) bike in for a service, I said I do my own servicing now, he said you’ll bring it in for something sometime?

Hmm, Inch ‘Allah…….

Exactly, it's a technical campaign not a recall,

the dealer is under no obligation to call punters to arrange the campaign work to be done.

So the customers who frequent the dealers for work / etc will be seen first

and if you choose not to..... it's schrodingers shaft ...... it may be seized, it may not be seized ....... :D

It`s shocking that a bike with 10K on it needs these parts replacing.

What exactly is the issue with the driveshafts that make BMW replace them either at the time of the check/drain install or as DJ123 has alluded to if the bike has over 36K?
Is it corrosion/fretting at the splined joint with the final drive (in which case if the shaft splines has suffered then surely the final drive pinion splines will have too in all cases?) or is it at the other end - the UJ?

10500 miles over 5 years implies less usage than 12300 in 2 years if the 5 year old bikes needs new uj, bevel gear etc .
I have no insider information and will just wait and see

I should also add that I bought the bike in 2020 with only 1200 miles on it… The other 9k odd miles have been completed by me in the last 2 years.. I’ve taken it off road a couple of times but never been through a ford or any deep water.. Can only assume water ingress has occurred due to a failed seal or something similar..

Well this serves BMW right…what were they thinking trying to build shaft drive bikes with no experience….bound to end in disaster…..no, wait, hold on!!!

Seriously, who would of thought that after all the years, nay decades of prematurely failing final drives for one reason or another they still cannot get it right. Other manufacturers have had this nailed for so long I just do not understand why BMW can’t get this right. The customer is clearly the accountants rather than the rider….really poor.
I purchased a 2021 1250 recently from main dealer, BMW used approved etc. but discovered the valve has fallen out (or in)., I have contacted them for a replacement to be fitted

Does anyone have a P/N on the valve? Might be worth having a spare based on many seem to be going missing.

By the way my Guzzi V85TT seems to have what looks suspiciously like a built in valve in the cardan housing at about the same point.

I entered the VIN for my 2015 R1200RS and the result suggests that the bike falls into the category.

I‘m not rushing to ask a dealer if he’d like a look because it’s going on SORN in a minute and hasn’t seen the inside of a dealer’s shop since second service.

Maybe in 2024 after I’ve had a squint while changing hub oil.

It sounded ok when it rolled over 45 K yesterday.
