Hi there

I want to add a pair of additional front driving lights to my 2015 R1200GS LC. BMW will charge me around £500 to do this with their own kit and tell me it would be foolish to mess with the electrics if I try and do it myself! I understand the BMW system is notoriously difficult to add to, right?

Has anyone any experience of self fitting additional lights, is it easy to navigate the electrics, what make of lights are recommended? Is it worth going down this route or should I just bite the bullet and spend the money with BMW?

There are threads addressing this in the forum, not that difficult to fit lights yourself if you have a basis of electrics.

Power the lights via a relay from a fused supply and trigger the relay from where ever you want - switch / headlight etc.........

Clearwater will sell you a can-opener module that adapts the existing controls and wiring, its all plug and play, as long as you buy their lights with it. This works best with the LED headlight.

If you want to go cheaper using separate lights and controller, Skene designs has a module that will do a 10-20%/100% power variation so you can run the aux lights as running lights (there are a couple other vendors too IIRC). However, if you have an LED headlight, you'll need a separate control switch to flip them since the LED high beam does not have the voltage to trip the module over. I don't think anyone besides Clearwater has figured that part out yet.
