I am getting the ferry to Amsterdam and then driving to Andermatt with Sitzerland and using this as a base. Has anyone stayed in a cool place near FRankfurt or Mainz? Then when I get to Andermatt (for 7 days), where do you suggestm that is kind of "off " the toursit trail, if that is possible in Mid June?

We stayed in Andermatt last year for 4 days and its a great central point for doing a few passes.

We camped at the campsite at the bottom of the village and it was OK. There are a few hotels around the village and they all look OK but I have none to recommend but I hope someone can recommend one as I intend to stay in Andermatt again this year

Good luck and have a great time

we stayed at the schussel for a few nights a couple of years back. pretty much ok, owner had very dry humour as i remember.

hotel drie konige over the road was rather more upmarket (and costly), with rather nice restaurant.

bikers everywhere.

I will book some places in the next few days and let you ono0w.
www.tripadvisor.com is a great way to start finding accomodation for any trip

I can recommend the Hotel Bergidyll. Our group stayed there 3 years ago. It has secure parking. You can find details on our web site - www.bbot.co.uk - go to the Chamonix trip and you'll find the link.

i consider pretty much anywhere in switzerland secure parking.

been to andermatt a few times
stayed on the campsite was a little chilly and that was at the end of july its canny high up
andermatt is good base but nightlife may tire after 7 nights
also watch out for the long straight that runs from andermatt to the furka pass keep to the speed limit mate was done big style by the swiss police last year
stayed in this hotel last year looked great from the outside but was very dated on the inside was expected miss marple to join us for breakfest

as for routes around andermatt theres loads in every direction had a run down ito italy them back over the san bernard pass

as for the route down though germany just look for small towns they normally have a couple family run hotel/pubs

I love this forum., There are a few special deals on at the Hotel Auroa in Andermatt and also another hotel not far away. Around £50 - £80 including breakast AND dinner if I am lucky. I will stay there for 4 days then go to Interlaken for 3 days
Thanks

yep u will find a LOT more accom there but also a lot more expensive, if you are camping then there are lots of very nice sites in the area, nights in andermatt can get a bit chilly but days are roasting. And as mentioned watch out for the coppers hereesp along that straightish bit of road from the furka also the area around the top of the susen or grimsel - the one with the reservoir ( i forgot which is which!) as they like to hide and jump out with the speed gun, dont worry about fixed cameras tho.

It's going back a bit now (2003) but we stayed at Hous Bonetti on the South side of the town (left hand side, riding out) but only a couple of minutes walk back to the centre. It's a big place, on top (literally) of the council vehicle garage. Secure parking available. Good clean rooms, very reasonable restaurant (used by the council workers for breakfast) and by far the cheapest available via the Tourist office IIRC. Back then it was swf 45 pppn.

Our fave drinking hole was Bar Gotthard, on the right coming back into town :thumb The Swiss Army were on manouvres at the time (early September) and Andermatt was full of very respectful squaddies. We spent the second night on our balcony watching the thunderflashes all around the horizon.

The best place we stayed was Hotel Eigenthaler, nr Luzern, swf 202 including food and beer but God! did we feel spoilt :thumb2

This is true. You only really here of petty crime in the big cities.
Andermatt, the only place I recall going where kids toys were left out all over the place, pretty crime free I thought!

TBH, you can leave your helmet and gloves on your bike and when you come back they will still be there ...
A little different in Zurich , Basel and Geneva but don't worry about secure parking .. honest!
It does take a little time to get in the right mindset ..

A lot of Swiss hotels look like they haven't been modernised .. it's just the way they are

Be ready to be rogered anally, however by the CHF :GBP exchange rate !!

yes my mate had the shite kicked out of him by some turks in basel on the main street and then stole his phone but the general rule is all is ok over here in chocoland, u dont get any hassle from anyone and u can leave your kit without too much fear of it going missing - but wouldnt leave the kit lying about in main towns as some turkish ( in Basel) oik will have it away.

Basel, you are so cosmopolitan with your Turks ...
Here it is teh "yugos" that are the source of everything evil - still surpised that UBS hasn't tried to pin their financial mismanagement on them !!

Here in Geneva they are moaning about the Georgians now and blaming the new Schengen rules... :eek

Anyway, check out BnB Switzerland - http://www.bnb.ch/

I have used a few of the places listed and in general they are pretty good. They range from simple home stays to small chalets.

I am going mid June, camping at Meiringen which is also a good base to do all the passes. I am riding over to Austria to watch the Erzberg Enduro leaving there on the sunday camping near Innsbruck and then on Monday riding to Meiringen and riding the passes over the next 2 days (tuesday and wednesday) and then leaving for Calias on the Thursday morning.

The Furka link road form Adermatt ALWAYS has a police van there every day with the police car at the railway car park waiting for you with a speed fine. It is just the time of day that will change.

I find it is to nice a scenary to go speeding when you are riding the passes
