Dropped 2010 GS off Sidestand

I had my GSA two weeks when I dropped it on the drive. I was moving it around our car whilst standing beside it and got the balance wrong. I couldn't hold it and had to let it drop. It landed on the car:blast. The screen taking the full weight of the bike on the tailight and bumper of the car.

I managed to lift it up with some help from my wife.

Damage as folllows:
Scratch on car tailight. Should polish out.
Small scratch on screen.
Bent upper screen support. I straightened this with no problem as it is aluminium.
Paint flaked off where it bent. Will be covered by GPS Mount.
Scrape on engine bar. Sprayed with ACF50.
Tiny mark on head protector.

Having seen what happens to the bikes on the Offroad course I am not going to lose sleep over this, just ride it.

Same here having never dropped my bike I have dropped mine 5 times in the last year :blast

1/ False neutral when starting
2/ In France caught my boot in the heated waistcoat cable :blast
3/ fully loaded I leaned it over onto the side stand but had not put it down :blast
4/ Deep sand in middle of the road in Moritanian turned in to a road but the bike kept turning dropped into oncoming traffic  kindly helped by a mannie jumping off his donkey and cart to help!
5/ Stopped at side of the road couldn't put my foot on the ground as I was in a dip and unable to move forward.

All character building stuff - they say but still felt an arse.

My saving grace Gobi panniers unmarked and H & B bars scratched but could be re-powder coated when the bike is tucked up one long winter week

Cant believe I done this 1st time ever in my life didn't put sidestand down properly on 2 day old bike what a Nob.
There's a thread on here somewhere about dropping new bikes.

At least you made it home first. I think the record went to the GSer who dropped his new bike in the showroom and IIRC knocked over another bike in the process. :D

Superb can't wait to meet some of you guys. Unfortunately its not me in Avatar its Ruben Xaus testing the Ducati Hypermotard at Jerez I think? Now there is a Lad who doesn't mind coming off.

Managed the most humiliating drop of all in january.

Pulled gently to the crown of te road and the middle of the bike lifted and then the whole thing stopped. No time or space to drop foot down.

Disc lock left on.

Fresh engine guard and tiniest 'character marks' as a reminder.

6 weeks from new - I thought I was parked up ok, sidestand down, but on a bit of a slope.
Was talking my foreman near the bike and heard a dull thump - felt a right twat.

Left valve cover was grazed (crash bars - BMW ones didnt help much), rear vario box scuffed.

The right hand mirror snapped for some reason, so the 150 mile journey home was difficult.

I replaced the mirror, will get valve cover done on the next service, not sure if the guards you can fit would have helped any.

I took it as a joke myself in the end although I cringed for a couple of weeks after, but the showroom status ended that day and let me throw the wrapping paper away.:clap

This is proving to be a confessional - I have more:

Backed out of my drive, couldn't turn into the road so rode 6ft along the kerb stone, went to put my foot down and leaned over shit shit shit it fell. both wheels were now horizontal on the kerb, bike lying in the road - 7:30 am with rush hour in progress, luckily a total stranger helped me lift it up before the curtain twitching started.

We live and learn :augie

Nice sunny Saturday .....

in March 2003 picked my brand new shiney BMW R1150R from SPC, on the way home pulled up at a junction and dropped it....just a couple of scratches but my embarassment was hugh.....:D:D

new 2010 2 weeks ago - first time out with Missus pillion. Fantastic ride up and back down the twisties to Hartshead - super impressive stuff. Get to roundabout, wife lolling about on the back , bit too much camber when we pull up and next thing we're rolling about on the verge and not in a nice way. splendid guy in following car helps me pick it up and biker roars up aggressively - did he knock you over from behind mate - no no it's all fine !

Not too much damage but that'll teach me not to put too much stock in all that don't worry about 24 inch inside leg boll~cks... and buy some head guards:blast

Picking my new GSA up in a couple of weeks, never ridden one before apart from a test ride, are they really that unstable on the side stand? Sounds like I best stock up on bubble wrap!!

A GS falling over is all part of the ownership :)

I had that happen to me last month. pulled into a service station and couldnt see in the dark that the ground was at a 50deg angle sloping down away from the bike, put the side stand down and the whole thing went over with me in the middle just getting off the bike.......the whole 300kgs luggage and all......over she went.

it took two other motorists to lift the bike off me and get it upright.....they were cursing the weight of it:aidan

The helpful motorists then put the side stand down and she nearly went over again :blast#

I was very annoyed at the bike going over but on the plus side she had crash bars. If I had bought an Aprillia RSV Mille Factory R as originally intended I think i'd be in a worse state had that fallen over........"how much does the bodywork cost again?"

True Story

I`m the geezer who makes the stainless bike parts for the GS :comfort www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk (quick plug, eh?)

Anyway, I had my GS for a few days and went to see my mate who owns a carpet shop. There isn`t enough room to put my GS right outside his shop so I moved forward to the next one, namely Pulse & Cocktails (Anne Summers shops on steroids) and yes i didn`t put the stand down fully and lent the bike over and it kept going all the way till it sandwiched me between the bike and a manniquin with some lurid (yet romantic) studded leather bodice which i am still trying to get our lass to put on for me

If you google Pulse & Cocktails scunthroep and go to street view you can see where I mean :bounce1

I use the place often (especially for the porno birthday cards) but, oh, was I embarressed that day :clap

um!!
seems like an ideal time to ask a question not so long ago packed on a bit of a camber with sidestand when i got back on i couldnt get enough leverage or ump when sitting on bike to get it up right and i thought i need longer sidestand so they dont lean over so far ( gs1200 is factory lowered but i,m only another 29" inside leg) any suggestions ???
some sensible ones as well :toungincheek

Nippy Normans do one....may be a Wunderlich item.

I know exactly what you mean....and when fully laden, I have been known to scurry about looking for a 'suitable stone'...

....then push the bike slightly over..push the stone under the side stand...

...then get on the bike and as if by magic the lean angle is reduced, and it is easier to get upright. :augie

......I'm not sure if Touratech do a 'suitable stone' though? :augie

My bike is a bit old now and needs a wee lie down every now and again. :rob

I found out accidently what works for me...

Normally I get on by swinging my right leg over rear seat. However, when the bike is loaded-up with a bag strapped to the rear seat I need to kind of poke my right foot through the gap between tank and the luggage on the back seat and leap on. I realised leaping on on this way lets you use your miomentum to bring the bike up straight, even from a heavy lean when fully loaded. Obviously it also works without the luggage.

It's simpler and easier than it maybe sounds.

i have bolted a hockey puck to the sidestand foot, makes a huge difference.
