Rode to Dent with the lads, had a bite to eat, went to start bike CLICK nothing, frantic waving, lads waved back smiled and rode off ??
No phone signal in Dentdale.
Local farmer pulled up in Landrover we tried to jump bike, just rapid clicking (solenoid).
6 beefy bikers tried to bump me NOWT.
After 3 hours in baking sun...swapped battery with Varadero Bob BM fired first time. so fitted BM battery to Varadero and jump started The Honda from BM no probs, got home safe.
Has anybody out there had total battery failure ?
Has anybody managed to bump start a BM and how ?
Why would the BM not take a jump ?
Any recommendations for Battery make, size, type.
Strangely Varadero battery fitted (taller) and 18 amp hr.
ps. always have a back up plan if abandoned.
Hope you can help Many thanks, out on the bike today using my Sprint battery.

It sounds like you didn't have a good contact with the jump leads

If you are bump starting something with a schitload of electronics ???? Remember to use the positive to the positive on the battery and the negative to a good earth point! Exhausts are good because they are usually solid mounted to the engine and you can usually find a good clean contact point

Do the same with the supplying vehicle as it will help ease the surge on the alternator Engine block or head or something metal and engine related is best

Try to avoid battery to battery as the voltage surge is not good

Let it run for 5 mins or so until you get some charge in it before you try starting

Also get your mate to check his varadildo Reg Rect output using a bad battery could stuff it

I presume that without a supply of amps the fuel pump will not work so a bump start is not an option unless you had a big enough hill to get some electric power from the alternator to fire up the pump. Seems a shame when the fuel is above the engine and Isaac Newton has already figured out a way to get the fuel from the tank into the engine.

Cheers boys

I think possibly I was not getting a good contact with jump leads as they were tractor size clamps.
I will remember not to try terminal to terminal jumps.
Off to the battery shop today, ttfn

Okay - I need clarification suitable for someone with no knowledge of electronics at all. Can any one provide a definitive list of instructions on how to jump start a F800GS using another vehicles battery? I have jump started my partners F650GS from my F800GS using battery terminal to battery terminal connections without issue by simply connecting the batteries and starting up the 650. The 800 was not running at the time and started up first time afterwards. The 650's battery had run flat after trying to charge one too many gadgets whilst camping :blast By the sounds of it the good result was more by luck than judgement. I would really appreciate a list of step-by-step instructions.

The tank would have to be quite high to generate enough pressure for the fuel injection! Maybe if you stick it on a gantry 12 foot above the bike.

On the point about connecting earth NOT to the negative terminal, why? I also don't see why you would be anymore concerned about surge when connecting than when fitting a new battery - i.e. do it with the ignition off long enough that everything has switched down.

Hi

had the very same issue myself on my GSA, stopped into the shop after a 45 min ride, came back out.. NOTHING.. not even a click..
the dash lights turned off and on .. flickered.. and that was about it

Got my dad down with jump leads.. click, click , click , click, click.. had to push the poxy bike home in leathers the last mile..

Anywho, I have an optimate charger so I put it on charge for 12 hours.. tried again.. nothing.. a few clicks and that was the end of it

So used my very handy BMW assist that comes with my extended warranty and they arrived out after 50 mins.. connected a battery pack and off it went first time..now to say that I was confused is an understatement...

But after I got it to the the BMW dealers this is what they told me..
The battery slowly lowers the amount of power it can store from an original capacity of 100% my battery was down to 40 or 50%.., and each ride doesn't charge it enough.. now my optimate which showed "fully charged" .. but fully charged it to the full capacity it now has (40%) which is not enough to start the bike...hence the clickedy clickedy click or nothing in my case.

and as for jumping, the BMW guy said when the battery is that discharged a jump wont work.. the battery is just fooked..

and as if to reprove the point.. stuck in a new battery and off I went..and oddly now that I think about it.. when I start the bike with the new battery it just catches and starts...
prior to my battery failing the bike did sound like it was straining to start...

anyway hope this helps somewhat..

What you did was fine. It worked didn't it ?
I would suggest that the engine of the donor vehicle be running all the time otherwise you could end up with two bat flatteries.

It's also good practice to hook up the leads and let it stand for 10 mins, with the donor engine running, before you try for a start - just to get a bit of juice in the battery so it doesn't pull all the amps. But folk don't usually bother, they hook up and turn the key.

Negative (black) terminal = chassis. so doesn't make no odds where you hook the black lead to. I use the negative terminal.
Some folks worry about sparks igniting Hydrogen - but that's only an issue in confined spaces and even then pretty unlikely. Don't worry about it.

Now, you're going to get half a dozen responses telling you that i'm talking shoite and that you MUST do it standing on one leg, facing North, holding an egg.
It's your call.

Cheers for that it all makes sense now, thought I was going bonkers.
