Just got myself a DRZ 400e the problem I have is,it will start and run lovely on choke, but as soon as the choke turned off,it splutters to a stop.

The bike has a full FMF system and has a main 165 jet which is clear and not blocked,it was serviced back in july which included a carb clean, plus I have cleaned it today again and put fresh fuel in.Any ideas:nenau

OK dude.... you need to tell me how long it been standing?
Was the carb drained when stood-up for the time?

I have a feeling that the pilot jet is blocked.
And usually, the float-needle gets a bit sticky to, and will benefit from a clean.

Check that there is no crap/water in the bottom of the float bowl. Use a 14mm spanner and take the lower plug out of the bowl and try kkeping it upright to see what is in the bottom of the plug.

The main jet is only used in the final 3/4 of throttle, from tickover to there is pilot and needle(slide) manage the fuelling up to that point.

It has been stood up for a long time,270 miles from new,but was serviced in July which included a carb clean,so I presume it has stood since then.
Don't know if the carb was drained!!! lets assume it wasn't.
Had the bottom of the carb off today a little bit of varnish in there.Cheers

OK, it needs a full carb off job......
Take the airbox grommet out the way first, and also the crankcase breather baffle, it will help with access. As will removing the upper engine brackets if the throttle cables need clearance for carb removal.
Use a solvent carb cleaner, leave it to soak.
Don't try and poke out any jet boreswith any metal objects, this only damages the jets. If you can find somebody with an ultra-sonic cleaner, get it in that for a session.

Don't over-tighten any brass items on re-assembly.....

If you cut a 3mm allen key down a bit, to give you access to the righthand of the float bowl screw above the starter motor, you can take the bowl away, exposing the pilot jet.
The main jet can be removed from the bowl plug, but the other parts need the bowl removing, including the float needle.

And, does your fuel tap still work, ie, turn from off to on to res to off. Usually the rubber gates inside the tap swell when allowed to dry, then when fuel is added again and the tap turned, the rubber shears a small slug off, which blocks the fuel pipe and then causes the tap to leak when 'off'....

Hope this makes sense.....

My latest DRZ was bought secondhand off an old friend who had not used it since 2004, and having only done 700 mile from new.

Ahh well...... 'cause Bike-it do a carb kit for a few quid which repairs the original tap. But I'll mention it here for anyone in the future who needs this thread for info on their re-discovered DRZ......

are the above two problems specific to the DRZ carb, as i've been using an airline on pumper, and other, carbs for decades without issue?

just curious.

Ok, bike is now sorted and running lovely, but the solvent carb cleaner would not budge the varnish inside the pilot jet, even let it soak as you suggested.:(
In the end I used a piece of wire from a wire brush, put the wire through the jet and sprayed and turned it on the wire at same time,if that makes sense.
Thanks for your help guys,I now know the carb pretty much inside out, this time yesterday I didn't,been a good learning curve:thumb
