Had some sparking trouble with the DRZ400 so replaced the Stator (Big thanks to Timpo for his link... 1/4 price I was quoted here:thumb2)...
..But it now seems the Starter Clutch is shagged too.

Having looked at Thumpertalk it seems to be a not uncommon problem for this to happed, so anyone know where I can get an cheap Starter clutch as I'm being quoted 300quid for the part only!!

Cheers

I have no idea if your starter clutch works the same as a BMW K series bike starter clutch. Does it run "in" the engine, and is it lubricated with engine oil ? does the starter spin but the starter clutch isn't turning the engine ?

If so, try adding about half the engine oil capacity with ATF ( auto transmission fluid), and running the engine for 15 minutes.

it cleans out the BMW starter clutches a treat, and also saves dismantling half the engine to replace it.

It is in the engine and as you describe.
My concern is that there are some bits & pieces of the knackered stator mixed in with the Starter cluch and any running may send them to places they shouldn't travel.
Also, with a wet clutch would there be any trouble adding tranny fluid?
For peace of mind I'll change the unit if economically viable.

Looing at this one at the moment, just waiting to see if he'll post over here (also could anyone confirm whether this may be comaptible with my 2004 DRZ400e?)

i'd change one on a BMW K series as well, but it's not the cost of the part, it's the long days work ( if all goes well) that it takes to change it .

Your squiddly bike maybe a lot simpler to do. :D
