DRZ400E - 7 Weeks Of Ownership.

Would these wheels fit a DRZ400S? And if so would it be possible to get the speedo working with them?
Lloyd.

There is no speedo drive on the front hub.
I have to use my gps as a speedo.

If your 400S has a rear swingarm similar to mine i.e. has the earlier snail cam adjusters then I know they will fit & as far as I know apart from the SM (with the upsidedown forks) all DRZ E & S wheels are the same so they should fit these models.

Another update for you DRZophiles.

Big thanks to Rushy for the Trail Tech Vapor speedo/tacho. :thumb2

Took it out for a test today to calibrate it to my GPS. After a bit of button pressing I settled on 2112 as a circumferance figure.

The manual has 2110 as the default setting so I tried a few circumferance settings either side of that (1mm apart, 2109, 2111 & 2112)

2112 resulted in this...

..so pretty happy with that!
I'll have to re-calibrate it when I put the SM wheels back on but it's very easy to do.

In daylight it doesn't need the backlight so I'm going to put a bullet connector in the line & leave it disconnected. If I ever ride in the dark & need it on I'll connect it back up but it runs fine on the 3v internal battery.

A doddle to fit, the most time consuming part was finding a place to relocate my GPS & fabricate a new bracket. (picture below, right hand corner)

Bit worried about accidently splashing it with fuel when I fill-up though.

Another tip for you, that GPS antenna isn't going to last long like that if you start to do some rough stuff. I'd think about an external one that you can strap to the bike somewhere. How do I know this you may ask? The same antenna is used on the Garmin GPS V and mine busted after a few trails.:blast

Seriously as well though, that streetpilot III is way to big for everyday use on trails. You wouldn't want to catch the family jewels on that when you inevitably have a get-off.

why dont you fit the ingnition and speedo /satnav like this?
ABCD0015.jpg
its out of the way then, i would have thought the little speedo would at least fit?
(my head light is rubber mounted so perhaps a standard one wont adjust enough for the garmin?)

I don't use the GPS all the time so it's not a permanent fixture.

I looked at fitting the vapor behind the headlight but it'd be compromised by the throttle & clutch cables fouling & I wouldn't get a clear view of it so as it's only small I'm happy where it is. :D

50 weeks of ownership

Took it for it's first (under my ownership) MOT.
I knew I had to fit a rear reflector & put the g/box cover back on & I just pumped the headstock & shock linkages with grease & oiled the chain before setting off.

Passed OK but the examiner had bother reading the mileage on the speedo & actually recorded my maximum revs!
Wasn't happy with that as my mileage was 2300 & my revs were over 3 times that. ..so he wrote out a new certificate. :thumb2

Bike still going well & 2 rides this year already under my belt.

Whats it like on the trails now with the different gearing? Was it just the rear sprocket you changed? Wouldn't mind getting the revs down a bit on mine too for the road work but it is great on the trails now.

What did you hardwire the GPS into?

Thanks
David

It's currently running 15/47, for some reason the previous owner fitted a 15 to the front, presumably to prolong chain life. (Std secondary reduction ratio for the E is 14/47)
It's fine on the trails & can cruise at 45mph on the roads. The vapor logged a max of 65mph the other day.

The GPS is wired (& fused) direct to the battery.

As you've posted here, I'll do a little update :D

Supermoto wheels now sold & I've bought a 2nd set of trail wheels. Now I'll always have a decent rear to throw in whenever I need it.

Still throwing money at it.. :eek

Still riding it.. :thumb2

Still taking care of it..

I bought the stainless spacer kit for the g/box shaft & will be doing that soon.
I'll probably do the starter clutch bolts (loctite fix) at the same time.
