DTC/ASC settings --- Help

Have a new GS1250 (yr 20) and have managed to work out all the settings bar ASC/DTC. I am trying to set up that function. Trying to follow the instructions on pg79 of Riders Manual for some reason I am not reading right. I can get up OFF OFF in each of the two windows that appear yet when I try to turn it ON I get --- --- in in each of the two windows and no matter what I cannot get ON or Auto. I just want Auto. For some reason the instructions for this setting is not making sense in my old brain.

So how do I know I have ASC/DTC in Auto? How do I set Auto or ON. I want to understand how rather than just get the dealer to do it.
Any help appreciated.

Surley by default it's always on, you only get a message when you have switched off?

I suppose the question I am asking is; when the ASC/DTC button is pressed either once or twice (or more) what does it show. I know it can show OFF in both windows but does it show AUTO or ON in the windows (when it is in auto or on). All I get is either OFF or --- (three dashes) in the windows. I think If I could get and answer to that I would be able to work it out.
