Dual purpose tyres for 1200...

Although tyres are personal it seems tkc are fine on road unless

a) you want to ride really fast

b) you cant ride for shit but convince your self it's the tyre letting you down

I use tkc's mostly cos I feel like a real adventure rider on route to the shops..........

Andres....were they the 'scout' version with the joined up block around the circumference, or the previous K60 version which was a harder compound rubber and known to be extremely durable?

Given the age as described, I suspect the latter

what are your feelings on mixing tyres?
i think a front tkc and rear k60 would be interesting to try.
for alaska id even be tempted with a rear tourance and front tkc.
i can cope with the rear sliding but not comfortable when the front lets go.

No problem with tyre mixing but I definately wouldn't have a tourance on the back for the Dalton. Bikes do run up there of these and road tyres but it's not easy, the weather has to be with you and will take forever (cue pix of R1's and HD's up there).

The Dalton is mostly hard packed dirt and gravel as are some of the other roads up there and the K60 is the tyre of choice for regular riders. I'll let you know what happens..........

Depends on what you mean by 'off road' 40%.

40% is 4 miles in every 10, which is quite a lot of 'off road' miles in a year, given that you live in Surrey and go to Box Hill to hang out with bikers.

Do you mean 'unmade roads' .... In which case bog standard tyres will be fine.

Or mile upon mile of desert and boggy moorland. Undisturbed by modern man, inhabited just by camels, sheep and creatures of imagination.

I used to have K60s on my Transalp which were OK - mostly road and occasional forestry and old tracks. Then I discovered Mitas E07s - fantastic tyre, much more predictable than K60s and pretty much same sort of tyre. Great wear too, last longer than K60s and are around £150/pair. Mitas aslo do 'Tourance' type tyres and also something that looks similar to the TKCs. And the guy that runs Trelleborg that sell them is something to do with BMW off-road school, so guess he knows something about on/off road tyres? Helpful chap anyway
