Off the boat in Holyhead then the very familiar (and temptingly quiet / straight) A5 across Yns Mon to the A55. Tedium up the M6 and then blam! turn east at Penrith and over the Pennines.

Great road towards Scotch Corner (the single carriageway bits anyway) - climbed to 1500ft - loads of snow - and really enjoyed the ride.

Like to do a couple of those climbs on the pushbike...

Often do a similar run myself, but prefer to go Belfast - Stranraer then across to Gretna, Longtown, Brampton, Alston, Weardale and down to Durham about 10 miles longer but very little dual carrigeway, no motorway but plenty of twisty back roads

I might well try that (if there's a) next time. I did look at the Belfast crossing but couldnt make the timings work on this trip.

When you leave Stranraer, turn off the main A75 just after Newton Stewart and onto the A712. It takes you through New Galloway and re-joins the A75 just before Dumfries. Because there is hardly any traffic, you can keep up the same time as the main road. But the best bit is, its about 35 miles and no straights. Its got to be one of the best biking roads in the UK. :D
