Looking at various maps it seems that the part of Croatia where Dubrovnik is situated is seperated from the major, northern part of Croatia by a tiny bit of Bosnia that comes down to the Adriatic coast. This would mean riding through Bosnia which is excluded from my insurance policy. Am I correct or am I misreading the maps and is it a real problem?

You do have to pass through Bosnia, but it isn't a problem. You hardly even notice that you've passed through!!!
No need to buy additional insurance as from what I remember we didn't have to buy additional insurance until we got to Montenegro.
If your really worried about riding un-insured through Bosnia, well there are plenty of car ferries that can either pop you over to Trpanj or Drace which means you can continue to ride on Croatian soil down to Dubrovnik.
They're quite cheap the car ferries and theres plenty of them.

The coast road is stunning though so we kept on going through Bosnia to reach Dubrovnik. I'd say don't worry about it and just enjoy the riding.

Same here.............. no problem. :thumb

I've not been down that way for some years. Actually since the war was still on. The travel through Bosnia is very short on your route.

Depending on what border arrangements there are, you May get stopped, and at that point you MIGHT find they charge you for a months insurance to cross their territory. This is what happened every time I crossed into B&H in both my Landrover and on my 1000S Guzzi. At that time, it was 3rd party cover, and you paid the government insurance agancy. That way, if you killed or injured a citizen, they would get looked after. With luck your cover note will still be valid for any return journey.

Good luck, have fun!

Nick.

p.s. Nearly forgot to add... That coast road is gorgeous! But if it is slightly damp it gets VERY slippery! We used to see the locals pulling cars back up the cliffs nearly every day, and several of the lads got into trouble when the road got damp. Just my tuppence worth.... don't want you to get caught out!

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll wing it! Not too sure if I'll have time to get to Dubrovnik after Slovenia and Croatias other must sees- e.g. Plitvic lakes - but just wondered what the situiation would be if I did get time. So thanks for the advice.

Personally I think it's worth the visit. It is a Unesco world heritage site and is a very unique place. There's a motorway you could take from the Plitvik lakes that would get you there in about 4 or 5 hours (we took 1.5 days taking the coast road and doing lots and lots of stopping and detours on inviting side roads). You can then take the coast road back up to the north (taking your time) having reached the furthest point in Croatia.
It's part of the trouble with touring isn't it? So much you can do and see, and so little time.
