Took a chance and fitted a pair of the new Dunlop Trailmax TR91 to my old 1150 GSA. Have to say that after around 1500 miles my impressions are very favourable. There is no doubt some 'feel' on the road when at speed you run over banding or white lines leant over but it is entirely predicable and no doubt due to the large tread blocks. I have moved from a BT501/BT502 pairing and these were excellent on road – the Dunlops have had a run today off road in south France and were excellent in loose gravel and some light mud – not a patch on Contis off road of course but they have earned a place in my heart. Have to say as well in the torrential rain we had in mid France yesterday they were faultless – no doubt helped by the massive tread depth. Recommended.

Are they as good or better than other Dual Purpose tyres you have used for off-road?

And how are they wearing.

Must admit I am tempted to fit them next time around

...

they re worth it..try them.,
i did with them 15000km and im gonna replace them with same.

I have a new set of these fitted to my bike for the last month, and yesterday I thought yes a good choice, they felt great in torrential rain, massive road puddles and gritty stoney roads the grip felt superb!:clap

Bit early to tell to be honest - just done a 400km trip south to Rome today on the A1 sustaining 80 mph for long stretches and they were as stable as my road tyres. They are similar to the 501/502 combination they replaced.

I got 4800 miles out of mine' 1800 of them was fully loaded across Europe.

I found them very good in all weather types & they held the road well in all this heavy rain.

Giving anakee2's a try to see if I can get more than 3 months out of some tyres, this is my third set of different tyres since November last year. :tears

I rode a GS with Anakee's and personally hated them, I had Roadsmarts on my bike and previously had used Bridgestones and Metzelers, plus ridden demo / loan bikes on other tyres.

This was the only time I disliked the GS handling, it seemed like the bike did not want to turn, it tried to sit back up whenever you leaned and felt very vague - like it had a flat tyre and knackered head bearings.

I had to check the tyre pressures as I was sure they were out, but the computer said no.

Only as they are tyres I bet a load of people out there will love them, but I hated the damn things.

The Dunlops are the nicest off road styled tyre I've tried, highly recommended.

Along with all other 'dual purpose' tyres though, they are no better off road than a pure road tyre but not quite as good as a pure road tyre on road so I still don't 'get' why peeps fit dual purpose tyres?

I have TR91s on my bike. I like them on-road (easily as good as the Conti Trail Attacks that it came with). Haven't really ventured off-road much at all, so no real opinion there - although the few bits of farm track and grass that I have ridden on didn't throw up any issues. One problem I have had though is balance. The local tyre dealer that fitted them had to have two goes at getting the front balance right, and the BMW dealer commented that it took a lot of weight to get it balanced. Likewise the rear - initial fitting + balance left a high speed vibration, BMW dealer had a go and have got it just about right, although (they tell me) there is still a very minor vibration remaining.

Well after the positive reports on the TR91 I took the plunge a couple of weeks ago. Initial views after 1000 miles are broadly positive but not an unqualified :thumb2

In am on a GSA which had Deathwings previously....the Dunlops are much better in the wet...and boy have they been tested in some truely epic downpoors of biblical propotions coming back from Cornwall....not a twitch or slide...very reassuring. Great in the bends, good on turn in and track well.

BUT high speed motorway blasts are an issue for me....the bike feels significantly less stable than previous conti's and the 'wings. Previously th bike has felt rock solid over 80 and following traffic. Now I am getting a slight wobble...nothing dramatic but definately less confidence inspiring than others and makes for a less relaxing ride. I reduced the pressure from 2.3 bar to 2.1 and this reduced the effect without impacting overall handling but still not as good.

As others have said...some pretty chuncky weights were also needed to balance the front although doesn't feel like an unbalanced wheel wobble....it is too slow for that.

On the strength of my experience so far I would go back to Conti's or do what I should have done this time and gone for road tyres...too much of a poser.

Would be interested on others experiences.

Cheers

Fitted TR91's about a month ago on my 12 GSA. Done about 1,000 miles and I'm well impressed.

Have had both types of Tourance, Battlewings and Conti's. Much to my surprise, if I were to put them in order of priority Battlewings would definitely be last, followed by Tourance EXP, then ordinary Tourance, and just at the moment I think I'd put the Dunlop's a nats whisker in front of the Conti's. Might have to have some more Conti's next time just to try and make up my mind!:augie

Bit of an update - new rear required

Well after just under 5000 miles the rear on my 1150 GSA GS is totally worn - squared off very quickly over the last few weeks to a point where it is flat now so I am going to get a new one fitted on Thursday at Mikes. Interestingly the front looks like new, no perceptible wear at all.

I like Mitas E08 - £140 a pair. Done 6,500 Kms on current set on GS, 4,500 Kms of which was through Europe with camping gear etc. Hardly worn... have E07s on Transalp, equally good, equally cheap. My kind of tyres...

Found this photo here - not sure its a good advert for Mitas...

 how did they manage that??? I've been using them on Transalp for some years, actually after having serious problems with Tourances (which have had recalls inc. one for GS size rears last year I think?) I like them anyway, and if it was more than a one off I'm sure there would be some sort of recall...
Unfortunately I can't read Hungarian (?) so don't know what the story is there.... but will endeavour to find out. It seems to be related to the very cold weather they have there... maybe the tyre was stuck in 4" of ice and yer one pulled away with plenty right hand - who knows? Don't look too handy anyway
