Hi guys,

Heading down south shortly and I'm looking for an Inn with B&B for me'n'the wife for one or two nights in the centre of Durham. Ideally within walking distance of the touristy things and maybe even the shops.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Cheers

Thanks Shaunie - I'll check out the links tonight. In the meantime, being a native, can you point me in the direction of a nice pub or two in the centre and anything touristy you would recommend.

Cheers again

The University used to - probably still does - rent out the student accomodation in the castle during the holiday period - can't get more central than that! Worth giving them a call.

Still does in a big way. Used St. Hilds and St. Bede's for an event recently. OK but not impressed with their administration.

There is no shortage of pubs! Depends what you like?

The Colpitts - £1.53 pint lager that blows your head off!
The Angel - really REALLY scruffy, punk / biker hangout.
O'Neills - traditional Irish pub with live music.
The Shakespeare - old fashioned, real ales, a maze of tiny "snug" rooms.
The Half Moon - nice and friendly, for the more mature.

That's barely scratching the surface, there are over 20 pubs and bars around the city centre.

Avoid North Road (bus station) at weekends it's chav central. Otherwise it's a drinker's paradise.

Big tourist attractions are the Cathedral and Castle. Wharton Park is nice with good views of the city. It's very pleasant to take a circular riverside stroll taking in the Elvet, Framwellgate, Kingsgate and Prebends Bridges.

4 miles away, Finchale Priory (ruins) has a very picturesque riverside setting.

The Garden House has canny accomodation just outside the town to be away from the noise about a 5 min walk. Nice pub and clean last time I asked it was £40 odd pound a night with breakfast.
