Just got a new Dell Dimension PC and have a DVD burner for the first time

Bought a cake of 25 blank DVDs from Maplin, pulled a random DVD off the shelf (Rude Boy Special Edition fwiw) and set down to try and burn a copy using the bundled Sonic software.

Oh dear... it seems there is world of options ahead...

The software copied a mirror of the source DVD but then rejected the blank DVD saying it needed to be a DVD 9...I know there + or - DVDs but whats all that about? Single layer? Double layer? eh?

So pretty please, what blank media and software do I need to copy or make DVDs?

Can someone give me a numptys guide to all things DVD burning?

Ty..

Try HERE first, then maybe have a read of THIS
and if that doesn't answer all your questions, there's a good forum HERE .

Basically, it's not as easy as just putting in a disc then clicking 'copy'.......but then you've already discovered that haven't you? ;)

My best advice is you should get a copy of Nero....it makes things a lot easier, and many people will have a spare copy because it often comes bundled with a PC and most people ever use it.

Perfect Fanum, thanks.

A bit of reading ahead....

In my day when you wanted to copy something you just waited until 7.25 on a Thursday night for Top of the Pops to come on, hung the microphone from your casette recorder in front of the tv set, hoped your dad didnt come in making loads of noise and waited for Jimmy Savile to introduce T Rex, press record and play together on the deck and bingo, 3 minutes later you had a perfect recording of Metal Guru on a C60 (ferric, natch) cassette.

And they call this DVD stuff progress. Tch.

BRILLIANT !!

First thing i ever recorded using that exact technique, that exact day and TV programme was

The Hollies - Air that i breathe
followed by David Bowie - Rebel Rebel.

God knows what date that was - 1973 ??

whats required

to convert from dvd9 to a 4.7 disk you need "dvd shrink", if dvd shrink wont do it due to encyption, use "dvd dycrypt" or "smart ripper" to decypt, then "dvd shrink to" put onto disk. Full instructions as per use at dvdshrink.info site.
