No idea
Mine has packed up, DELL computer. Bought a new one and fitted it. Nothing happens. Its not detected as D drive at all. What am i doing wrong.
One thing defeated me. In the manual for new dvd thingy theres a bit about slave/master etc. It has 3 lots of pairs of pins with one connect thing that came fitted to master. t then says
If you only connect one device on the cable, you can set the jumper to master or slave
If you connect two devices (eg CD ROM & CDRW) on the same cable, the jumpers must be set differently for each device(CD ROM as Master, CD RW as Slave and vice versa) The same rule applies to the connection of having your hard disk and another device on the same cable.

Has anyone any idea what this splather means. I'm lost.Whats an IDE port or IDE cable??

Help???

The ribbon cable, that plugs onto your IDE port on your motherboard, usually has two connectors:
1)Right at the end, which must be connected to the most important 'MASTER'
2)mid way, which must be connected to the least important 'SLAVE'

You must alter the jumper settings on whichever device is connected to this cable, depending accordingly if you plug it into the MASTER or SLAVE position.

Most devices are set with their jumpers as MASTER, so you must follow the manufacturers advice- just pull the tiny little plug,(dont lose it) which covers a set of pins, off and replace it to SLAVE position or whatever as per above.

There is another position, I believe called 'cable select' but I have no knowledge of using that one !

If your jumper settings are wrong, then your PC will never SEE your device

Also- cant remember if it is possible to plug the IDE cable in the wrong way round- but it usually has a red stripe, which should be plugged so that it is nearest to the device power cable.

Hope that this is of some help
:D

Don't know what all the funny little letters mean but i've changed the tiny plug thing across and it seems to work now. The wide plug thing with loads of little holes to connect to the strip with loads of spiky bits of wire sticking out...is a one way fit only.
Cheers

AAMOI if you jumper for CS on two units on one IDE channel then they will automatically assign master & slave status to each unit depending on their physical position on the cable.

i think the end connector becomes master. or is it the other way round?

who cares? no one ever uses Cable Select anyway :D

I didnt think it mattered where they were on the cable whether they were master or slave, as long as the jumper was set. If anybody knows for certain I would like to know for sure though??
