Well santa bought me a DVD +-R writer for christmas - so a few questions

it came with Nero software - but is there better software for DVD to CD copies . .. er backups

what files do i copy ? the .vob ones ?

do i copy in dvd-r format fo domestic dvd player playback for the tele ?

If you want to "backup" retail DVD's I think you're going to need DVDShrink. Commercial DVDs are usually dual-layer, 9GB discs, and you want to copy (sorry, backup :D) to 4.7GB DVD -R.

can i hear the sound of axes being ground somewhere?

moral issue: where do we stand on nicking a program designed to nick someone else's?

2 wrongs etc. i suppose :(

Sorry mate, piracy is a pet hate of mine. Not looking to get on your or anybody elses case in particular.

There is also an issue about video and record companies preventing you from legitimately backing up material you have bought. For example I would prefer to use copies of my CD's in the car rather than the originals. Also I've got 3 kids 8 year old twins and a 6 year old and I'd prefer if they used copies of CD's and DVD's rather than the originals as they have wrecked several already by scraping them.

fair enough.

just to round it up - i've been searching, reading and downloading.

I am now the dvd copier king.

First - you need to DeCrypt - d/l dvd decrypter, run it and save the files somewhere on your hard drive.
http://www.dvddecrypter.com

Next - in particular order - you need to manipulate those files to a recordable 4.7 GB
D/L DVD shrink and open up the decrypted files. http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

you'll need NERO as the burn engine though.
re-install each prog twice so they register with each other though.

Reauthor the disc to incude only the main movie, not the menu's or extras - unless you really want them.
Drag the selected files across and DVD shrink auto sizes the compression ratio -and hence quality - to fit the 4.7 capacity of your DVD blank.
( Less is more )

Hit burn and bob's yer loaf of bread.
