Hi,
i need something to store photos / video from my digital camera on when i'm on hol. I was just going to get a basic hard drive card reader thing, but then i saw this http://www.blokesstuff.com/Product....02_20GB_MP3_&_MP4_Video_Player&ProductID=1098

which will play mp3 and video as well. What i want to know is can i copy DVD's onto this? I presume i will need to convert the DVD to MPEG-4, then do i just copy the MPEG-4 fiel onto the player? Are there any DVD-MPEG4 converters that people reccommend (preferably free or cheap haha)

Oh yes, it only has 20G, how much memory does a DVD converted to MPEG4 take?

Thanks

Archos are great devices but the 402 screen is very small to watch a movie on

do a search on the site on archos

you get a movie in under 700 mb easy and if you resize it just for the archos about 400 mb IIRC

maybe if you could to stretch to the Archos AV500 30Gb you get more bang for your buck £299 in argos and you get a free battery with it with a leaflet :thumb 4" screen and loads of video conections

sorry i forgot to say it converts a dvd to divx itself on the 500
but i'm not sure about the 402... i think you have to do it on your pc

and you can fit a video camera tooo

The ipod photo is good for this. Much smaller and 30 gb ( also in 60 gb ). I've downloaded films (converted to mp4) pics and music. The screen is superb and easy to view without going cross-eyed.

but it doesn't do have the stuff that an archos can and it's got a small screen too 2.5"( I have to say it has a good pic on screen but so has the archos)
One of the good things about Archos is it comes with the docking station, remote conrol for the tv hi-fi etc. and nearly every lead you ever need... where Apple AV conection kit costs another £69.00

The archos is available in a 100gig version

sizes
apple 60gig 103.5 x 61.8 x 14mm

archos 30 gig 124 x 76 x 18 mm

Another good feature of the Archos kit, over the iPod is the ability to copy pictures straight from your digital camera without getting a puter involved.

This is handy if you fill the memory card on your camera, you can just download everything to the Archos and clear the camera.

They do a good deal at pixmania.co.uk, you get the 30Gb Archos AV500, a case for it, a charger that will run off 12v and a remote control unit which includes an FM radio tuner. All for £341, see their website here, looks like a sweet deal. :)

Fcukin gadgets. I was happy with my ipod 'til you posted that. Stop it.

ok i want an archos 500 now, and may get the cam to go with it £389 including the cam at pixmania
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/237314/art/archos/av500-mobile-digital-vide.html

i just want to see a sample of the video from the mini cam to see what the quality is like. Looks like some hours of interent searching are in order tomorrow whilst pretending to work :D

Are these hard drive things likely to skip lots on the bike if in a tank bag? I presume if i put it in my pocket (or arranged some kind of harness thing to wear it under my jacket) then it would be better?

remember you get a free battery at Argos
which means a lot if you're not buying a 12V adaptor for the bike

I had an Archos and it never skipped in my tank bag...Also Whatton has one he swears by... or is it at :D
