Hi Buz,

It is a right frigging nightmare, I use handbrake but so far have only managed to convert files downloaded from the net..

Good luck

If you manage to convert a DVD please let us know which program...

Nope everything built in.

Install software.
Put DVD in drive
Click which bits you want i.e. main movie only, no trailers, which language etc.
Rip movie (Takes about as long as the movie plays for).
Out pops MP4 file suitable for loading into Ipod, PSP, whatever.
It also copies and clones DVD's.

It's one of them bits of software that just works.
Get the Platimum (mobile) version.

Just checked and I see the price has gone up.
You need the basic version first (57 Euros), then get the mobile option (34.60Euros) so I guess the best part of £80.
Not cheap but, like I say, it works.
I think when I got it a couple of years ago it was about £50

I use Handbrake and Handbrake Lite and no problems ripping DVDs and putting them on my iPod Touch (same as iPhone). Mind you I am using an Apple Mac and once Handbrake has ripped the DVD or DVD track into an MP4 file, I then add it to Itunes and then sync it to my Touch.

Just had a look at a few sites and they say it won't convert copy protected DVDs. Does that mean it won't convert most purchased DVDs?

if you have the later version of VLC Player on your mac, handbrake automatically uses the decryption element from that program.

personally, i now use RipIt to strip the dvds of encryption, and Visual Hub (no longer officially available, but handbrake is similar) to convert to ipod, appleTV etc.

works a treat.

Ditto. Works fine everytime. On a Mac anyway!

Have just downloaded Handbrake and tried to convert a coupld of commercial DVDs - will not work. Both times gets stuck on an error "scanning items 2 of 3".

Any ideas for a Windows user? :nenau

Anyone get any further on this?
I'd like to convert a dvd to use on my iphone ... free download preferably :D

If I want or need to Rip a protected DVD I use DVD43, which is free
I use AVS Video Converter for the conversion which not free.
With that I can create movies for the iPad and iPod so iPhone would be just as easy
