i need a program to convert them

Google 'dvd ripper'.

There are loads that will rip to an avi file or similar, or you can use a DVD copier prog and make an ISO image then mount it with Daemon tools if you want the quality.

Make sure your av prog is up to date before you go looking....a lot of the sites have viruses or worms on the software 'cos it's all stuff to do with piracy.:(

difficult to recomend a program that allows you to do something that's seen by some as illegal....:blast

DVD ripper .com is a piece of software which allows you to copy for safe storage video material from discs, obviously nobody in their right mind would use this to make illegal copies of feature films for any purpose...:augie

there's other software which can do much the same most will offer you a trial version to help you pick one which you like. I would say becareful some woman is being made an example of in the US for ripping and sharing sharing stuff.

there's also other ways to do much the same but they all need a degree of computer skills, capture cards and editing software. I like the DVR (digital video recorders) dead easy to use plug it in a capture away to your hearts content, if PC's are problems this is a good alternative to look at.

my use only

i want to put films that i already own on my hard drive not to share them so that should not be a problem

the answer is in what I put above, as a point of clarification while you own the disc you do not own the right to make a copy. That's the beauty of the copyright law...:augie

if we could all make copies of whatever we fancied I'd be making £50 notes and passports:thumb2

I don’t think it’s illegal as long as you’re "backing up" your own DVD's, only if you plan to sell or distribute copies. I use a perfectly legal program called Pocket DVD. It's simple to use and I originally got it for watching DVD's on a PDA but you can increase the quality setting (& consequently the file size) to whatever you like. Now I use it to save DVD's to my laptop for travel. Works great, Check it out...

It will be, the largest file size that can be stored on a DVD is just shy of 1GB, so you will have many files, however there should also be a file called VIDEO_TS.IFO, this file can be played by applications such as PowerDVD so the files can be viewed just like a DVD normally would (Menus etc), it will also play the entire movie even with the film spread across multiple files.

how do i use that setting ?

The reason we're not all jumping up and down and helping Panmman (which does normally happen here) is that it's a very iffy topic and we don't want to cross the line into being seen to condone piracy- there are all sorts of issues for the site and its owner, BHT..

Suffice it to say, all the info you need is easily and readily available ...Google is your friend, just start off with what's above and you shouldn't have any major problems :)
