No surprise that after 5 years of being laid up my akarm suren batteries are toast. The display reads "DWA!", so I am going to replace the batteries.
The battery type is CR123A, that much is clear, but should they be the rechargeable type, or not? These batteries can have a long life in non-rechargeable form bht if they are being recharged from time to time they ought to be replaced with the same rechargeable type.
Does anyone know?

std replaceable batteries

the module can be reached by dropping down the rear mudguard... on the TC bikes you can do it all with the seat left on the bike - (the earlier bikes need two filisters screws taking out at the top front to get the back to drop down - on either bike the mudguard squeezes past the silly sprung bracket at the rear - the GSA pannier brackets add another 45 mins of time wasting)

the are three black Philips self tappers that hold the module on the mudguard... two left ones just need to be loosened, the single screw the other side comes out - and the unit can then be free to make life easy to get the top off

there's some circuitry on the lid with a silly baby computer laptop fan type plug - on mine they even crossed the wires over, so it pulls the other plug off the board connector, so you have two white connectors to double check are still connected and fully seated home when buttoning up the job...

at 16 years old both my panasonic batteries said they were still above 3 volts each...

the battery type is the clue - they are just standard batteries - they don't do other iterations of the CR123A [do they ?] - I believe they are there JUST to back up the noise (if someone cuts the main battery cable) and to keep its brain happy [I guess so it auto disables with the key] after the three day stop draining the bike battery intervention.

Yes there are 2 types: Rechargeable and non-rechargeable . Hence the question 😉
If you try to charge a non-rechargeable battery it can be damaged, shortening its life .
A rechargeable battery often has a shorter life than its nob-rechargeable equivalent because it can be recharged.

A question I have often wondered and never found the answer so will be following this with interest.

CR123A standard, as @botus & @RadioFlyer says, not the more expensive re-chargeable type used in cameras.

They are only a back-up should say a thief disconnect the main battery, hence discharge/decline progressively, with a lifespan of around 10 years.

I asked the same question a few years back. I fitted non rechargeable and it's been fine since. And I did mine from the top if I remember correctly but others have said it's easier from below
