Hi,

Has anyone ever tried to dye a twat suit? I like the suit but the colour system I'm not keen on. I'd like to dye it black, or possibly just the trousers. I appreciate that the reflective material on jacket would probably change. Also, as I have no knowledge of dying any info on what/which type of dye would be useful as I have visions of riding in the rain and possibly dying myself in the process!

Many thanks

what a brilliant concept idea, I think matt black paint would adhere to the material and being non water soluable the chances of colour transfer to you is greatly reduced.

Best try a colour swatch first, match pots are reasonably priced at B+Q this month:thumb2

Rag roll rolled could be good, giving both the appearance of texture and colour but you'd need an oil based paint I guess and I'm never too sure which oil is best for that sort of thing.

Please post pictures of this project I'm certain more people are interested in this.

Thanks to the few who actually posted useful advice. I guess its good to also know that there are so many who feel they have an exagerated opinion of their own entertainment value. Thanks Tossers.

Yep, done here

Yes, I have. I originally bought black dye and bunged my grey Rallye 2 jacket and trousers in the washing machine with half a kilo of salt. The result was an orange combination more suited to my EXC than the GS!

I found a place in Leicester, run by a biker, that explained the issue with man made fibres and over dye situations. Long story short - you will never get the jacket and trousers black due to the fabric. He offered to put it through a process and see what happens. As predicted, the jacket and trousers didn't go black but he did manage a very dark chocolate brown which was fine by me. The stitching is still pale due to being nylon and the reflective panels went murky but, again, fine by me. At least I didn't look like all the E&C fans that rushed out and bought the kit!

The jacket is around seven years old, dyed around five years ago and washes up like new.

A mate sent his suit off this summer for the same treatment and is very pleased with the result. He removed the suede panels on the trousers before the process though as the heat will turn them into quavers. Easy enough to get them stitched back on. I can find out the cost if you wish.

The place I used is Blue Mill, I would use them again and would recommend them.

Here's my jacket:

as has been posted, NO it wont Dye with shop bought stuff.

i tried a couple of years ago because the jacket was grubby, and i wasted about 10 quids worth of dye and salt.

rang up the dye company, and they said its mostly down to the material, along with the waterproofing process.

if i were you i would be looking for a Blue Mill type place near you, as Mucky Helmets jacket looks good:thumb2

FYI - I posted my gear to Blue Mill as they're nowhere near me. Excellent service all round and they'll ship however you wish.

There are loads of places around that will dye stuff but, when I was looking around, very few understood what bike gear was constructed from and simply said they couldn't do anything with man made stuff. The bloke from Blue Mill understood the fabric and was willing to push the material into a controlled over dye situation. As before, it will never be black but is the darkest it can be.

Whilst here, the dye has never run, not faded and never stained anything even when soaking wet. It also washes up really well, I use the Nikwax stuff even though the jacket's far from waterproof. There was no damage to any part of the jacket from the dye process.

Of course, there is now a risk that every fekker will dye their twat suits and I will no longer be unique..... :blast
