Was the first part of the chassis numbers on the r80g/s the same on the early bikes 80/81 ??
I have bought another early g/s which i have applied to the the coc for a conformity certificate.

I only have the last digits of the number and they are asking for all 17 but the sticker is missing.

Thanks

I’m no expert on such things but these bikes never had a 17 digit vin.
Gellandstras would have more knowledge on frame numbers etc
Edit,
I try not to get involved in difficult regestration issues as can’t be arsed with the admin.

That's what I thought and tried to tell them 🙈
I shall await another reply from coc and if not contact bmw classics in Germany.

Hopefully someone can give me an answer.
Cheers 👍

BMW used a 7 digit series

check with BM dealership

I know when I had to do my R100GS they just added extra zeros in front !

I went through this process recently with BMW France. I gave them the numbers stamped on the frame of my R80GS Basic and they gave me the CoC. BMW France recognised that it wasn't a full 17 digit VIN and there wasn't a problem. They did however charge me 100€!

I need it dating for dvla to bring it back from French registration. I have a registered date but not the build date. I have found it online as Feb 81 but that doesn't seem to be good enough for them.
Just contact your BMW dealer and ask them to check it on their system

And confirm by post if need be

That's how I got My French R100GS registered

Having been mentioned above this is for what it's worth. All early G/S frame numbers started with 625...... For example, the first one was 6250001 and is in the window at Balmer Lawn BMW Brockenhurst.

I've registered imported bikes before and got a NOVA certificate each time (from the importer) and then a letter from BMW Archives (€50) confirming that the VIN number is from a bike they produced and they give the date of manufacture (for getting an age-related plate). No COC needed. You fill the correct form in and send it along with other stuff to DVLA. They may send someone round to check the bike exists and has that frame number. You can use The BMW Club DVLA officer to help (but in my experience he was more of a hindrance).

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot.
Coc have said the bike is too old to be on their system so I will have to go down that route.
Cheers for the advice 👍

Still a useful resource, cheers Phil

Indeed - some interesting info there. It shows that my R100GS PD which was first registered in Germany in April 1996 was actually manufactured in November 1993. Wonder where it hid for those 2 1/2 years

From when the URL worked this is how mine came back, https://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

Eventually got it sorted thanks guys.
Bit of a ball ache but its done now.
Anyway, got out for a blast on it yesterday, actually runs very well.
Slight hanging idle which I assume is a sticky bean can or weak springs. I'll get that sorted ASAP.

That looks lovely. For the hanging idle, my advice before doing anything else is to make sure that the tick over is around 900rpm, not higher. On my Basic I went round and round in circles for ages checking and re checking for air leaks, rebuilding the carbs with all new jets, ultrasonic cleaning, new bean can, valve clearance checks, carb balancing over and over etc. In the end the only thing that stopped the hanging idle on mine was setting the idle at 900 rpm. It runs perfectly now, but if I tweak the idle up above 950 rpm I get the hanging idle. It's important by the way to make sure the motor is properly up to temperature before setting up the carbs. At least a half hour ride required

Ok thanks. Not had chance to have a better look as yet. Will check that also.
Cheers 👍
