Early GS works bikes/Herbert Schek

GP

and finally

Now need to find a donor bike - having done some investigation I am on the look out for an R65 or 45 pre-1980. Wheelbase is 1390mm for these bikes as opposed to 1465 for the R80 and R100. This can only help even though a little. The frame will need chopping to move the engine forward to gain some length in the swingarm which will give me the ride height. It will be a bit of a guessing game. I have asked my mate Rod Spry to help. He is an engineer and frame builder. Check his website Rodspry.co.uk. I will try and get the frame right first before worrying about the motor. As an aside how much is a beemer engine rebuild...ball park? Any recommendations?

It's a major job to move the engine forward. I think it's easier to shorten the frame in the front (which also give you the opportunity to alter the steering-angle.)
If you check the link in #9 you will see what I mean.

It's impossible to say. If you want a lightweight shortened engine there is a lot of work!

..how long is a piece of string :augie

Richie Moore is someone I have been dealing with recently and will build an engine pretty much to requirements. He is building me an engine at the moment. I have a lot of confidence in him as he is currently developing parts/modification for people who using airhead engines for racing, which means he is actively dynoing different approaches to give quantitive comparisons.

His web site is http://www.moorespeed.co.uk/

But think about it sooner rather than later he is soooo busy he quoted me 10weeks to turn around the engine.

i am not an engineer - I push paper for a living:type I will leave the decision on how the frame should be modified to Rod. He will find the best way to do it - ignore my guess's!

the bike on his wedsite rings a bell - wasnt it featured in TBM in the last couple of years? Very nice and thanks or the lead. The bikes in the pics are in germany.

The later 4-stroke MZs, (not the Skorpion or similar which used a Yamaha engine), all used the Rotax 500cc engine unit, I think one of the models was a 500R.

Yes, the moorespeed bike was featured in TBM. Pete, I've been waiting 9 months for some of Richie Moore's time to finish some fabrication and make an exhaust for my Dakar rep. He's been telling me since before xmas " It won't be long now".Rekon you'll be lucky with 10 weeks, but it'll be well worth it.

You better not be teasing us now.:D
Those silver bikes look fantastic. Everytime I say to myself I'll leave my R80GS as a lazy para someone puts up pics of some awesome looking bikes.

Have you got a link to wherever those bikes are from or some video footage?

Intersting thread this and whilst looking up Sheck , who is ,I think regarded as the "inventor " of the gs, I came across this site. BMW's weg zur Enduro-teil 2. This tells the story of early off road Beemers and I particularly like the 1964 Sebastian Nachtman bike, Now that looks like the father of the gs to me.
Have a look, you can translate to English, watcha think:bow

wish I knew how to link it or post the pics, matbe someone else can do that.
